Midweek metalPORN! If you didn't see the news about the Gairsoppa

Odyssey Marine has recovered millions of dollars of silver from the SS Gairsoppa, a British cargo steamship sunk by the Germans in 1941. They arranged with the UK government to keep 80% of the silver and give the Brits 20%.

They posted some pretty amazing pictures of the wreck and the loot:

The value of silver just went down some more due to more supply image

I wonder if they will value this silver with a "collector value" added on and not just melt or melt + $1-2? Much like the silver found at the SS Central America wreck.

Cool find. Glad the Brits were sensible in making a deal (unlike the other punks recently in the news).

About 7,000,000 oz. of silver is estimated to be down there. A cool $168,000,000 is Odyssey's part if all recovered at a sell price of $30/oz. Wow.

I especially liked the Odyssey website's "ship wreck" coins for sale, graded by NGC, using their -Shipwreck Effect- grading system.

How many of the bars do you suppose they'll keep for posperity, or for resale? Versus how mucy of it will be melted and used for something else?

Surely all of it won't be left in its current state.
