oh boy, how much we could write on that subject.
no particular story but i've purchased numerous coins well below market value and turned around to flip em on ebay for 30-70% profit and there still may have been margin left.
large cents have been a key area for this for many middle date die marriages.
the majority of big profit coins come from shops/shows as i prefer to buy in-person

hmm, the title says best. maybe you don't mean money but i've bid over $100k on ferarris and high 10s of thousands into some nice coins, didn't win any of em but i bid
if memory serves i've bid on a s-79, a nice one and that had me shakin in my boots a bit, partially from anticipation, anxiety and dear-in-the-headlights-fear!

I had attributing Connecticuts, and I just decided to take a decent enough picture of the group and let them fly.
Turns out that one of the coins was either the finest known or second finest known Miller 33.39-z.20, (obviously) a very rare variety.
The bidding went from about $100.00 to $2,300.00 in eight seconds!!!!

Also, two coins in my mint state set were bought off of eBay, my 07-D in pcgs rattler holder MS 65 later upgraded to MS 66, and the 14-S bought as an MS 65 upgraded to MS65+. At one point had a 98-O in 65 in rattler, did not upgrade, later replaced with the Duckor MS 66.
I stopped doing eBay when their fees went up too much for my liking. I sold some coins through the bay for a while, but found that their accounting didn't match mine, and I seemed to not be able to find anyone in their system to communicate with to fix their overcharges. At that point I stopped using eBay to sell. Only buy occasional items, some non numismatic.

Starting bid was less than $10. I put several bids on it, watched it to the end, and it went from around $25 to over $300 in the last few seconds, my bid being the winner.
The slots were all accurate, the 09-S VDB was a Fine 12, and the 14-D would have been the same except for a scratch on the front. There was no 09-S or 22 plain, but all the rest of the slots up through the 80's had coins, no proofs.
As I started my Lincoln set in 1963, most everything except the 1909-S I had, I had collected from circulation. This finished my set.
On a side note, the 1909-S I had bought at a coin show in 1967 or so, in AU condition, and spent all my money from my paper route. Many years later, I found out what the terms cleaned and whizzed meant. It still has a weird, almost glowing red, color.
It soured me on coins for 30 + years.
