Well I did snipe a PR70DCAM Kennedy in the middle of the Super Bowl one year for about half of the price guide value at the time.
BTW it was from a forum member that very seldom posts anymore.

Found a listing several years ago by a national dealer, with large scale images of a very scarce variety of Morgan (1878 8TF VAM 15) in an unattributed NGC-64 holder. Knowing full well that it was probably going to receive lots of attention, I put a max. bid on it and let it ride. No one else bid. image

OT! I bought a shell collection last year on ebay! 1000's of top quality shells. It was heart breaking...the Mom collected 1 area and the Dad collected another. The family sold the collection to an estate sale buyer along with what sounded like all the furnishings from their house. Well...I talked with the buyers as I was packing up the collection....They made a profit on the deal just from my purchase. I received all the records made by the original collectors. It was a lifetime of work! I could never do that if I was one of their kids. I have receipts for 3 of the best shells in the collection that were purchased years ago for more than I paid for the whole collection. Yes...they are worth at least that now. The killer is there are tons of self collected shells from Fl. that are know extinct(and becoming pricey). How does that make ya feel about what man is doing to the world???

oh boy, how much we could write on that subject.

no particular story but i've purchased numerous coins well below market value and turned around to flip em on ebay for 30-70% profit and there still may have been margin left.

large cents have been a key area for this for many middle date die marriages.

the majority of big profit coins come from shops/shows as i prefer to buy in-person

I once saw a satellite photo of a Peace 35-s Peace dollar on ebay. The picture was so fuzzy that all I could be certain of was that the coin had luster and was in a capital holder. The starting bid was $35. I bought it for the opening bid. This is what showed up.

I bought a very schlocky accumulation from a local customer, where the only thing in it that was decent was a trio of Connecticut Coppers.

I had attributing Connecticuts, and I just decided to take a decent enough picture of the group and let them fly.

Turns out that one of the coins was either the finest known or second finest known Miller 33.39-z.20, (obviously) a very rare variety.

The bidding went from about $100.00 to $2,300.00 in eight seconds!!!!

I once bought a partial Barber half set, second book, whitman folding-type, showing the coins from 10000 ft and a bit out of focus. Even with such limitations, and only able to see obverses, I bought the set for a few hundred dollars. Some real nice F coins in there and overall nice coins. Did pretty good on that one. Just to balance it out, though, I had a bad experience once with a listing for a 97-O half in EF40 that I won, sent my money order, and the coin never arrived. Never got the coin or my money, dratted crook!

Also, two coins in my mint state set were bought off of eBay, my 07-D in pcgs rattler holder MS 65 later upgraded to MS 66, and the 14-S bought as an MS 65 upgraded to MS65+. At one point had a 98-O in 65 in rattler, did not upgrade, later replaced with the Duckor MS 66.

I stopped doing eBay when their fees went up too much for my liking. I sold some coins through the bay for a while, but found that their accounting didn't match mine, and I seemed to not be able to find anyone in their system to communicate with to fix their overcharges. At that point I stopped using eBay to sell. Only buy occasional items, some non numismatic.

i applaud you for telling us all that you bought a collection that contained nothing special but upon selling, someone else figured out that one coin was a finest known of a scarce variety.... it takes strength to admit that.

The first item I ever sold on ebay ... 10 consecutive CU 1988 $100 NY Star notes. Got them from the bank for face. When I listed them there were no bids all the way until about 10 minutes to the end of the auction, then they sold for $2,000.

I bought this 1839 WD half raw in an old 1980s "Coinvestors" plastic holder. It now resides in a PCGS AU58 holder and is probably worth 3.5 times what I paid for it. I gave the Coinvestors holder to a slab collector on this forum as a gift.

In 2007 I sold a MEL Washington $1 in a PCGS First Day holder labeled as a 2007-D. This was the first reported MEL in their plastic, but as part of the First Day program, went through the system before the MELs were known. Bought my DSLR with the profits.

I bought a set of Lincoln Cents in the albums with pictures that looked like they were taken by a drunk cell phone. The only close up was of the 1940's page, and it was listed as a garage sale purchase. The space for the 09-s VDB and the 14-D had coins in them.

Starting bid was less than $10. I put several bids on it, watched it to the end, and it went from around $25 to over $300 in the last few seconds, my bid being the winner.

The slots were all accurate, the 09-S VDB was a Fine 12, and the 14-D would have been the same except for a scratch on the front. There was no 09-S or 22 plain, but all the rest of the slots up through the 80's had coins, no proofs.

As I started my Lincoln set in 1963, most everything except the 1909-S I had, I had collected from circulation. This finished my set.

On a side note, the 1909-S I had bought at a coin show in 1967 or so, in AU condition, and spent all my money from my paper route. Many years later, I found out what the terms cleaned and whizzed meant. It still has a weird, almost glowing red, color. image

It soured me on coins for 30 + years.

The name of the company was the Bronx Coin (Company ??)

I was lucky enough to win this beautiful 1914-S Buff...It's in GREAT condition as you can see but the seller used a scan for his images on e-Bay and it cost him. I won this coin for $53.00 with my remaining e-bay bucks. I'm happyimage
