CPG and the 1970-D Washington Quarter DDR FS-801

Hmmm.

This morning, I was informed by James Wiles that the photographs for the 1970-D DDR Washington Quarter listed as DDR-001 FS-801 in the CPG are actually photographs of DDR-004!

Two scenarion's now exist.

1. The submitters of the FS-801 intended for DDR-001 to be the coin for the book and as such sent the correct "textual" information BUT sent the wrong photographs.

OR

2. The submitters of the FS-801 intended for DDR-004 to be the coin for the book and as such sent the correct "photographs" BUT sent the wrong "textual" information.

OR

3. All the corrrect information was sent but the CPG editors (before Ken Potter mind you) just got it wrong.

At any rate, since 2006 when the VOL II 4th edition was released, I have been looking for and submitting the "wrong" coin.

Since PCGS uses the CPG as their reference guide, is it safe to assume that they've been incorrectly attributing 1970-D DDR-004 coins as FS-801 since then?

For those that are about to reply that the 1970-D Washington FS-801 is moving to the appendixes next year, don't bother. There's no indication of exactly when the 6th Edition of VOL II will be released so, as it sits, the FS-801 will still be searched for by enthusiasts.

  • There are about 108 class III doubled (types F and G) dies for the 1970 D quarter. I state this since I found 4.4% of 1970 D's circulating in the Boston area were class III doubled dies. Being made by dissimilar hubs, the second hubbing did not slip into place. Thus most also have differing degrees of rotation or pivot doubling not to mention both designs had master die doubling. However most are too minor to arouse much or any interest. The two listed in the CPG are class III doubled dies plus whatever else. Still they are called low interest.

EDIT: Numbers corrected. I started off with the wrong figures. Sorry about that.

Judging from the responses to this thread, I'd have to agree with you Herb! image

  • Lee, Didn't you submit a bunch of these that CONECA decided were too minor to list?
