York Coin Fair

Has anyone on here been to the bi-annual York coin fair in recent years? I have considered attending this July, but as my funds are currently a bit low I was wondering if it was all high-end material - are there very many under £50 coins or junk bins? Also, is there much in the way of modern (post-1600) coins? Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can give!

Gotta love it, modern = post 1600. Wonder what the guys on the US forum would think of this. image

It's funny how we as Americans tend to have a very limited scope on history and age. Many Europeans live in housing that is older than 99% of all the standing structures in the U.S.

It's all relative I guess. One I used to run into a lot was confusion on Greek coins. Someone would ask for Greek coins, and I would ask, "Ancient or Modern?" They would say, "No, not modern." So I'd pull out a box of ancient coins and show it to them and they'd get a weird look on their face. "No, I meant older ones, like 1890s through 1920s."

I guess 400 B.C. was too old. image

With 2600+ years of numismatic history, I think it's fair to call the last 400 years of it (less than 15% by year) "modern."

Of course I certainly wouldn't call the Model-T a "modern" automobile. So, I guess it just depends on what we're talking about. image

There are usually half a dozen junk bins at the most. Plenty of post 1600, plenty of hammered, one or two tables of modern crap, a couple of book sellers. Basically anything and everything. You can spend as much or as little as you want

Friday is best because most get there at the opening and so Saturday gets quiet meaning dealers are itching to leave soon after lunch. More money flows on the Friday too. Last January seemed to be quieter than on previous occasions too with quite a few dealers saying they hadn't had a good sale, so maybe the economic downturn is biting.
