What are your plans for Numismatics?

I've been collecting strong for 2 years or so and had to do an evaluation on my numismatic goals.

Plans are as follows:

-Continue to build and complete a set of Toned Franklins
-Continue to load up on physical silver
-Sell off all other U.S. Series (Except Large Cents)

-Eventually move into Florins and Spanish Colonials
-Final Resting Place = Ancients

How about you?

Searching is the game. The plan remains the same. To find something worth keeping, or sharing with the numismatic world.

    1. Find some way to get my numismatic library put up on shelves (it's mostly packed away in boxes) without getting kicked out of the house.
    2. I bought a lot of numismatic books, runs of journals, and auction catalogs during the last three years----time to get serious and read them.
    3. Figure out what I want to collect when I grow up---I am torn between large cents, 19th-century gold, historical mint medals, foreign coins that circulated in the colonial U.S.-pre-Civil War time span.
    4. Attend more ANA summer seminars---I had a great time taking the Kraljevich/Goldstein 'Colonial Americana' course last month.

    My plans:
    1. Continued inventory buildup to retirement along with some shows to compliment online store.
    2. Buy them right allowing decent return on investment.
    3. Maintain financial position of cash equal to at least 25% to 50% of inventory so good deals can be taken when available.
    4. Load up on nice deals off auction sites, shows I set up at, etc.
    5. Primarily concentrate on material under $500 allows for decent markup and not buried in big ticket stuff. Some coins over this - see #6.
    6. Build up gold and platinum position with bullion coins and semi-mumismatics.
    7. Keep taking advantage of auction deals where mod commems can be bought for BV+$15 or where max bid around 70% retail can take it.
    8. Continue buying collections / estates from ads online, etc.
    9. Junk greysheet (with its small hard to read print), coin facts has it all.
    10. Buy mainly PCGS coins plus USM issues which can make 70 and then be flipped. Its fun to buy PCGS coins from office while bidding with IPhone.

Spend 40+ years collecting with a passion.........to have my kids sell them to a pawn shop for 40% on the dollar before I'm even cold. (evil grin)

In God We Trust.... all others pay in Gold and Silver!

I have short, intermediate, and long term plans for the hobby:

    Short term--
    Sell a few more coins
Go to MNS coin show next week
Start new secret collection with TomB as my mentor image

    Intermediate--
Continue to add to my Early Americas collection
Consolidate the dirty gold collection into two boxes (yikes, I hope they are large boxes image )
    Sell a few more coins
    Read Len's early mint book

    Long--
Separate the act of buying/selling coins from being numismatically active
    Sell a few more coins
Have a juried exhibit at an ANA show
Have or share a table at a local show
Inspire someone else to collect and appreciate original 19th century gold
    Read more
    Attend ANA summer seminar
Quit work, so I can spend more time with coins and other hobbies

    The End--
    Die Broke
  • Ooops! I made a mistake while I was printing out your list, which I rarely do. You nailed it,and now I just have to get a subsription to Coin Facts.image

Short term: sell off most of my collection to build up more capital to be more engaged in buying/selling for profit.

Learn as much as I can for the time remaining while at my internship with Heirtage.

Long term: help other collectors and some day teach a class at the ANA summer seminar.
Make a profession out of numismatics.
Have fun! And help others do the same. Hopefully I'll never lose the passion/ spark I have now for numismatics, as it has truly changed my ldr for the better and introduced me to some of the greatest people I've ever met.

At the moment I am taking a break from collecting. The idea of paying "retail" for any collectibles just doesn't appeal to me anymore.

Same old thing. Upgrade my collection a bit, fill a few holes, and take lots of breaks in between.

I think a coin that says "this one flipped out" would be cool on my tombstone.
