1987 Fleer Wax Box Rip - Results

Just ripped a box of 1987 Fleer. Probably my favorite year of Fleer besides 84. Ive opened a lot of 80's boxes but never this one so Id thought Id give it a shot - especially since I bought the box for $15.
Was happy on getting Barry Larkin because I didn't have that one.
Got a lot of star power however, no Bo Jackson or Barry Bonds

For the price I paid, it was a blast ripping open. I really did want a Larkin so I'm happy.
Seems like a really fun rip! Congrats
Edit: If you don't have but want that All-Star Mike Schmidt, Ill send it to you. The only thing is that it has a tiny indentation on the right side. It was the bottom card of a pack I remember so it took a little hit but 4 very strong corners.

I don't collect cards from that era anymore, but even I would pick up a box of '87 Fleer for $15! Nice purchase.

Theres a card store about 20 min from my house. I passed by earlier in the week because I needed to pick up some pages for my card binder along with some card savers to submit to PSA. The store has a bunch of sets and sometimes pretty good wax boxes on clearance (and sometimes over priced) and this one was priced at $20. I asked the guy if he would let it got for $15 and he said sure. I was surprised to see this wax box there seeing how Ive always wanted to rip one open.
Fleer usually had the best coilation (sp) of any of the card companies. It looks like that box was made of packs from other boxes. Very seldom would you get duplicate cards in this era Fleer boxes
I cant say I agree with that statement nor would we know for sure but I can tell you that Ive opened up plenty of 88's and 89's and have received many duplicates in 1 box. Boxes that have come directly out of cases. Also, 1 pack from this box contained 2 of the same regular issued Jose Canseco card. So I cant say Fleer did as good of a job as you might think.
I don't mind getting doubles at all actually because that means I can get doubles of higher dollar cards. I think I started noticing that companies would carry less doubles from wax boxes beginning with 1992 Bowman. Ive opened 2 boxes of those and rarely do you get doubles with those. 93 Bowman even more so.
The Ruben Sierra I think peaked at $12. Good 80's memories there.
According to Beckett - August 91 - the key cards were:
Kevin Mitchell - $11 - Today - Common
Ruben Sierra - $13 - Today - $2
Barry Larken - $6.50 - Today - $8
Will Clark - $30 (although this did peak at $35) - Today - $3
Bo Jackson - $20 - Today - $8
Jose Canseco - $12 (I pulled 2 in 1 pack with this rip - would of been a great pack back in the day) - Today - $1.50
Barry Bonds - $9.50 - Today - $12
Bobby Bonilla - $8.50 - Today - Common
Dave Magadan - $4.00 - Today - Common

I remember seeing a Toys 'R Us employee still in his work outfit walk into a local card store with an unopened Fleer rack case (he would have paid $71.28 plus tax for it), put it down on the counter, get handed a hundred dollar bill, and walk out. The store owner was selling them at $3 a pack, and they didn't last long. Wax packs with $.35 MSRP were $1 to $1.25 anywhere you could find them.
One guy who worked at a local Kay-Bee Toys store became a dealer at the local weekly Holiday Inn show, selling nothing but current year singles.

<< <i>I remember the Will Clark from that year was crazy, didn't it book for $30 or $35 once? >>
The Will Clark was and still is my favorite card from this set. It was one of my prized possessions as a kid. I remember getting "grounded from my cards" once, and I couldn't wait to get them back just to make sure that card was still okay. lol
I was 13 in 1987 and this was the peak time of my card collecting fun. I had just purchased my first Beckett. It had Wade Boggs sitting on a set of stairs on the cover. In the issue, they covered all the incredible Rookie Cards in the 1987 sets and I remember the guy they ranked as #1 with the best long term potential of being a superstar? Cory Snyder!
My family and I would sit and crack open a wax box together. It was always so fun. It was usually 1987 Topps or 1987 Donruss and on a rare occasion it would be Fleer, because they were so damn expensive. They shot up to like $5 a pack during the 1987 season and we just thought that was nuts. They were so gorgeous AND hard to find. Kevin Seitzer went on an insane tear during the '87 season and the only set that got him was Fleer. Dave Magadan was hot. Canseco and Joyner were tearing it up and of course McGwire broke onto the scene in a big way. The 2 superstars today, Barry Bonds and Barry Larkin, were lost in the sea of other higher profile rookies.
The 1987 Fleer set was the best. Just gorgeous and so many cool photos. The Donruss was ugly and everywhere, and they were always off center or chipped. The wooden borders of Topps were boring. It was all about Fleer that year.
I do remember opening a box was somewhat boring. As someone else alluded to, you always knew you were rarely if ever getting duplicates. You'd get 540 cards and many times it was 540 different cards that would go a long way towards building the 660 card set. We always had such a hard time getting the Wally Joyner. It was just a fluke thing
ANyway, what a fun rip for $15. I'd do it too just for nostalgia for that price! Thanks for sharing...

<< <i>brings back some of the best and worst memories. i remember a local distributor trying to get me to take last years basketball if i wanted the baseball he just got...ick, who wants basketball? no one... WOOPS! >>
HAHAHA ... I remember the same thing. Used to sell at small shows here on Long Island. In 1988 I had the chance to buy all I wanted for $10 -$20 per wax box. Choice was 1 - 1988 Donruss Baseball; 2 - 1988 Fleer Baseball; 3 - 1980 Basketball; 4 - 1986 Fleer basketball.
As Duff said ... who the hell wanted Basketball!!!!!!!!!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
I bought a case for $200.00 and sold them over a period of time from anywhere around $60.00 to $100.00 per box. I did rip two boxes or so and sold each of the Robinson's for about $20.00 each. Fun times................

I had a friend who collected Will Clark in 1990 or 91. That 87 Fleer rookie was just smokin. One of the hottest baseball cards in the hobby. I think it was the most valuable card in that set for a long time. The Bonds didn't take off until a lot later.
