When the explorer La Salle's 1686 "La Belle" shipwreck was discovered, they found one coin

And what a freaky find it was!

Not only was it 1600 years older than the shipwreck, it was from a Roman emperor who ruled for only three months. Strange, eh?

Good luck charm? If so, it didn't work.

Yeah, it sure didn't. They also found two skeletons aboard.

Of course Otho himself wasn't all that lucky.

The right coin inscription looks like "NERO CAESAR".

Nope- I do see what you mean, but as best I can tell, it pretty clearly says "OTHO". See the first "O"?

But some of the folks on the FORVM boards think that's a bronze Otho... a Renaissance-era "Paduan" copy, in other words. I'm not so sure I see that. Most sea-salvaged silver is black like that. I would think a corroded bronze would be greener? They were looking at the lettering.

Maybe it is that unknown Roman Emperor "OREO CAESAR".
