Whats a good price point for common date pcgs $5 saint or indian?

I want to buy one piece of old gold, I have narrowed it down to a $5 eagle or indian in pcgs slab in a circulated grade. This would be a substantial purchase for me, so i don't want to pay $1 more than I have to, so I want to minimize the premium above spot as much as can be reasonable expected to actually get a presentable coin. I collect on a junk bin level budget normally.

in response to the first 2 responses I am re-thinking my question and the thread title;
Typically all the coins I collect are circulated, that is why I focused on that grade level for this too. I prefer the personality (and price point) of circulated gold.

I have done the ebay research; AU tend to go as low as $450 for the lower level AU, while the few XF are about $425-450.

Are those normal levels for them for B&M and shows?

    Just look around and buy something you like. Just buying some gold to have it by price not really a good idea. Buy something that you will enjoy looking at, or buy modern gold. Look on the BS&T boards.

  • I would do as I all ways do when wanting just an example of a series of coins, buy the highest grade
    that I can afford in the serie I like the best. As for price, well there's the catch I think in that researching
    price ranges on the coin I decide on gives me an idea of the range I have to pay. Then with tracking a coin
    to me there really is not a way to do it rather than to look at all the venues the coin I decided to get is
    available.

    I would recommend that you go to a show and look at several gold pieces and pick out one that you really like.

    I just sold a common $5 piece (Constitution silver/gold set) for well south of $400 on the BST.
    You would have to get it graded as it's still in the mint packaging. I was happy and my buyer
    will be happy when it arrives. (the set does have a 90% silver dollar in there too).

    WOW! I should spend much more time (and maybe money) on the BST. That just demonstrates what I've believed lately,that it is a buyers market now.Although,I've also read that at the higher end of the coin market,prices are very firm and getting stronger.
