Top card for each of the four sports, post WWII

I turn to my PSA Brothers for their opinions on this topic.

When the following question is asked to your average sane human being ... Who happens to like cards...

"What is THE (BB,BKB,FB,HKY) post WWII card to have?"

What do you feel is the answer? Now, I don't care if the card is rare or "overpriced" or whatever.

Baseball: 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle (say what you want about this card, but it is simply the card to have in this discussion, as everybody knows what it is)

Basketball:

Football:

Hockey:

For hockey, it has to be the Ron Greschner rookie card. O.K. maybe the Gretzky OPC rookie card is the better choice. But Janet Jones is no Carol Alt. image

    Basketball: '48 Mikan? '57 Russell?

Football: One of the '48 Leafs? Luckman? Bednarik? Baugh?

Hockey: '66 Orr Test Issue? '54 Topps or '51 Parkhurst Howe?

Edited to add: I know I'm one of the older guys on the board, but I was alive for the debut of only ONE of the above cards! LOL

    I would go:

    MAINSTREAM
Basketball: 1949 Bowman George Mikan (or 1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain)

Football: 1948 Leaf Sammy Baugh (or 1957 Topps Johnny Unitas)

Hockey: 1951 Parkhurst Gordie Howe (or 1966 Topps Bobby Orr / or 1951 Parkhurst Maurice Richard / or 1951 Parkhurst Terry Sawchuck)

Non Mainstream cards like 68 Topps Test Basketball would replace the mainstream ones but I don't think that's what the poster was asking.

Perhaps not the most valuable, popular or greatest player in each sport, but probably the most influential players' rookie cards post WWII:

Hockey: 1951 Parkhurst Gordie Howe (defeating 1979 OPC Gretzky)
Basketball: 1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain (defeating 1986 Fleer Jordan)
Football: 1958 Topps Jimmy Brown (defeating 1957 Topps Unitas and 1965 Topps Namath)
Basbeball: 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle (defeating 1948 Leaf Robinson)

For baseball I don't think its even close.. Mantle 52 topps I s the card to have. I know its not his rookie but its by far the most popular card. Its the one card that someone who isn't interested in baseball card collecting knows about. I also don't thik anything comes close to its value. Even a psa 1 gets 4 figures.

Basketball- this is a tough one.. I think its between Jordan 86 fleer or 57 topps Russel

Football - I think its definitely 65 Joe Namath.

Hockey - prob 79 OPC Gretsky but Orr rookie is very close too.

I think the biggest debate would be in basketball and hockey. The problem is that the Jordan and Gretsky are prob the most popular cards in their sport.. Its just really hard to ignore Russell and orr

    Fun question.

    IN MY OPINION:

    Baseball: 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle

Basketball: 1986 Fleer Jordan (though I happen to be more of a fan of the Bird/magic)

    Football: 1981 Topps Montana

    Hockey: 1979-80 OPC Gretzky

Since I'm no baseball card collector,I would prefer a Jackie Robinson or Ted Williams over Mantle.
    For basketball-1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain
    Hockey-Gretzky
    Football-Gotta be 58 J.Brown

    As a backup
    Baseball-Aaron
    Hockey-Still Gretzky
    Basketball- 86 Jordan
    Football-65 Namath
    J.R.
    Needs'
    1972 Football-9's high#'s
    1965 Football-8's
    1958 Topps FB-7-8

As far as mass appeal I would go with the following

    Basketball: 1986 Fleer Jordan
    Football: 1981 Topps Joe Montana
    Hockey: 1979 OPC Gretzky

For basketball I'll go with 1988-89 Fleer #43 Dennis Rodman RC, I love me some Worm!

    I like Scott's list.

I would go with the following

    Baseball - 52 Mantle
    Hockey - OPC Gretzky RC
    Basketball - Fleer Jordan RC
    Football - 76 Payton

Football for me is the toughest since there really isnt a single one awesome card, but I think the Namath RC, Payton RC, Montana RC, Elway/Marino RC could all be considered

I agree with these choices. However before I read the thread, I would have thought that Bird/Magic/Dr J. trio card from 1980 would have gotten some votes. Any consideration there? I know nothing about Hoops cards BTW.

It does seem like the Gretzky, Mantle, and Jordan cards are no-brainers.

Any love for the 55 All AMERICANS?? Perhaps the Thorpe or Four Horsemen cards?
