How Many of you have Grossly Overpaid for a Card you Really Needed?

I just won this poorly centered 8 at the maximum bid I placed. My max bid was almost at max VCP. Normally I wouldn't even bid on this card let alone bid above VCP. However, it's the last 8 I needed to complete my set in 8 or better. As soon as I find a nicer one, it will be replaced. What cards have you needed to complete a set and which ones?

1967 Philadelphia Dick Butkus PSA 8.5 (1 of 1)....paid WAYYY too much for the card, and sold my '8' for peanuts once I acquired it.

I prefer to overpay for cards I don't even like because I misjudged the value and thought I was getting an incredible deal. But never one I needed.

I had a '68 set that was part of the large collection I had to sell. IIRC that Cardenal card was REAL TOUGH to find centered!

I'm a Modern Player Set collector, of course I'm on this list!

For instance, in 2010 I spend $168.50 on a 1988 Topps Cal Ripken Jr. PSA 10! Not to mention the case(s) I've opened trying to chase that card, and the submission fees from sending in about a dozen of them. Yeah... the VCP is less than $70 on that now.

Oh well, it's worth it to me. image

I admit it. I overpaid for Bob Uecker cards and Robin Yount cards. At least I had the highest rated Uecker master set for 2 years.

Oh yeah,....I think most of us in the registry have done this at some point or another.

Here's another thing.... How many of you have bought the same card, same grade, for a lower price later? (Simply to bring the cost of our registry sets down).

I overpaid for a card, still have it, and then I submitted a raw card I purchased on Ebay, and it PSA graded the same as a card that I overpaid for (about a $100 less total investment). Still have that one too. I just bought another one on Ebay this week....same card, same grade, for about $40 less than the card I overpaid for....which is probably closer to what the card should have sold for. This 3rd card is the one I put in my registry. I have since listed the other 2 on Ebay.
  • So long as I value the card more than the cash I spend, it isn't overpaying. If I value the cash more than the card I won't buy it. So never once have I ever overpaid for anything, baseball cards included. Also, there has never been a time when a baseball card represented a need for me, that has always been reserved for food, water and shelter

I sure have done this myself, when they added Shane lechler to Raiders set,I had to be
at %100 no matter the cost and if its on vcp,Im sure I set high mark for an otherwise $1 card.

  • I've done it with tickets. I also saw my "grail" come up about a mont ago, one comes up every 1-2 years. I set a snipe of $1261, about 50% over market value. In the last minute there were no bids and when all was said and done there were two bids on the ticket. I was the under bidder.

I'm a Cardinals team set collector, so the answer would be yes on that. In fact, in just a few days, I have a ridiculous snipe set for a card that I need. Bidding will be fairly competitive so I am expecting to over pay for it. Hopefully, I get it for less than I am thinking.

I'm standing on the edge of this right now.

I can spend $80 on a card that I've only seen in stock at Burbank Sportscards for over 3 years, or I can cross my fingers and hope it appears on Ebay and likely win for under $20.

I'm just not sure that the satisfaction I'll get from crossing the card off my list will really be worth the $80 though.

    Generally, all the time.

But "overpay" can be such a tricky word. A lot of what I collect is rare (whether in absolute rarity [pre-war] or in condition rarity [modern])

That said, you have to often be the market maker to "win" the card. So by pure virtue of supply and demand, at that given moment, to be the winner, I have to pay higher than I could sell the card for (at that given time).

In terms of grossly overpaid, I try not to do it too often. One of my best ways of tracking this is how often I'm the underbidder on cards that I'd like. I tend to "grossly overpay" more on cards that are <$100, and am much more careful with cards >$1,000, etc.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

That's a good point Marc. With truly scarce cards, there's probably no such thing as overpaying since the market isn't very well defined for many of those items. In this example, there have been quite a few Cardenal's sold over the years, so the pricing is pretty well established. It's just there haven't been a lot of them come up for sale in recent months. That always results in a spike in prices. I probably should have spent the $150-$175 and bought the 9 that was recently auctioned. That would have been a better value for the money.

I'm more of an autograph collector, and I definitely overpaid to meet Willie Mays in Cooperstown, Summer of 2008. I had passed on him at $100 for a ball/flat the previous year, and knew it was a good deal compared to his other IP prices. I bought a fresh clean ball, and bought my ticket. When I got up there, he was only signing balls in sharpies, and wouldnt change. I got out of line, and wasnt sure what to do. So I bought an 8x10 of "the catch", got back in line and had a really good experience with him.

The photo is matted and framed and hanging in my office. It looks really nice and I have a good memory of the experience. Although in hindsight it bugs me that I could have gotten one a lot cheaper on ebay. Instead, I wish I had him sign a multisigned piece I started shortly afterwards, or a 1950s card. While it looks nice in my office, it still bugs me.

I remember thinking how outrageous it was that they were charging $70 for Mickey Mantle's autograph at a show in 1994. Now it's the best money I ever spent. I not only got to meet him but I have a photo of him handing me the ball while shaking hands and of course a signed Mantle ball that I have no doubt is authentic.

I've overpaid but I don't know that I've ever grossly overpaid. On the plus side I've also gotten lucky and underpaid for cards so I figure it'll all balance out by the time I complete my set.
