How Many of you have Grossly Overpaid for a Card you Really Needed?

I just won this poorly centered 8 at the maximum bid I placed. My max bid was almost at max VCP. Normally I wouldn't even bid on this card let alone bid above VCP. However, it's the last 8 I needed to complete my set in 8 or better. As soon as I find a nicer one, it will be replaced. What cards have you needed to complete a set and which ones?

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
For instance, in 2010 I spend $168.50 on a 1988 Topps Cal Ripken Jr. PSA 10! Not to mention the case(s) I've opened trying to chase that card, and the submission fees from sending in about a dozen of them. Yeah... the VCP is less than $70 on that now.
Oh well, it's worth it to me.

<< <i>John, I never overpay. That is why I am known as "The Underbidder". >>

Here's another thing.... How many of you have bought the same card, same grade, for a lower price later? (Simply to bring the cost of our registry sets down).
I overpaid for a card, still have it, and then I submitted a raw card I purchased on Ebay, and it PSA graded the same as a card that I overpaid for (about a $100 less total investment). Still have that one too. I just bought another one on Ebay this week....same card, same grade, for about $40 less than the card I overpaid for....which is probably closer to what the card should have sold for. This 3rd card is the one I put in my registry. I have since listed the other 2 on Ebay.
I sure have done this myself, when they added Shane lechler to Raiders set,I had to be
at %100 no matter the cost and if its on vcp,Im sure I set high mark for an otherwise $1 card.

I can spend $80 on a card that I've only seen in stock at Burbank Sportscards for over 3 years, or I can cross my fingers and hope it appears on Ebay and likely win for under $20.
I'm just not sure that the satisfaction I'll get from crossing the card off my list will really be worth the $80 though.

But "overpay" can be such a tricky word. A lot of what I collect is rare (whether in absolute rarity [pre-war] or in condition rarity [modern])
That said, you have to often be the market maker to "win" the card. So by pure virtue of supply and demand, at that given moment, to be the winner, I have to pay higher than I could sell the card for (at that given time).
In terms of grossly overpaid, I try not to do it too often. One of my best ways of tracking this is how often I'm the underbidder on cards that I'd like. I tend to "grossly overpay" more on cards that are <$100, and am much more careful with cards >$1,000, etc.

That's a good point Marc. With truly scarce cards, there's probably no such thing as overpaying since the market isn't very well defined for many of those items. In this example, there have been quite a few Cardenal's sold over the years, so the pricing is pretty well established. It's just there haven't been a lot of them come up for sale in recent months. That always results in a spike in prices. I probably should have spent the $150-$175 and bought the 9 that was recently auctioned. That would have been a better value for the money.
The photo is matted and framed and hanging in my office. It looks really nice and I have a good memory of the experience. Although in hindsight it bugs me that I could have gotten one a lot cheaper on ebay. Instead, I wish I had him sign a multisigned piece I started shortly afterwards, or a 1950s card. While it looks nice in my office, it still bugs me.
<< <i>I'm more of an autograph collector, and I definitely overpaid to meet Willie Mays in Cooperstown, Summer of 2008. I had passed on him at $100 for a ball/flat the previous year, and knew it was a good deal compared to his other IP prices. I bought a fresh clean ball, and bought my ticket. When I got up there, he was only signing balls in sharpies, and wouldnt change. I got out of line, and wasnt sure what to do. So I bought an 8x10 of "the catch", got back in line and had a really good experience with him.

I remember thinking how outrageous it was that they were charging $70 for Mickey Mantle's autograph at a show in 1994. Now it's the best money I ever spent. I not only got to meet him but I have a photo of him handing me the ball while shaking hands and of course a signed Mantle ball that I have no doubt is authentic.
