Help with an idea.....moving Large group of autographed hockey.

I am still working on a project of a signed sportscard collection purchased early in 2011. It involved Hockey, baseball, football, basketball, golf etc. I have pulled so far over 4,000 baseball, basketball, football, and a few hockey to be PSA DNA submitted. So far only the mega stars (Gretsky, etc.) have been pulled to send in the first 1000 cards. With that being said I have around 10,000 or so signed hockey cards left from this deal. Of those around 590 are raw, but PSA DNA worthy ($25-30 each minimum value). I personally do not collect hockey and am looking for a creative idea or way to move this lot fast. Most of the other bulk is in set order and commons mostly. I have been through most everything from 1989 and older. I have little or no knowledge of hockey autos and values (especially 1990 and newer). With that being said I am sure there are many tough signers etc. in the newer stuff. I would like to net out around $25K for the lot overall to help with grading fees for the other 4000 cards (HOFers, deceased and future HOFers, tough signers) that need to be PSA DNA encapsulated. I was thinking of doing 20 card lots for $50 with 1 hit (HOFer, Dead, future HOF, tough signer) per lot or perhaps trying to do some trades. Any thoughts or ideas on how to do something like this would be appreciated. I do not know if there are even enough hockey auto card collectors around to even sell that many. Thoughts? Please share. If this would work I may consider doing it with some baseball, basketball, and football as well. I would be open to trades for baseball and football cards I need as well for some of this stuff.

Thanks in advance
Jason

    Not cheap enough.

My suggestion would be selling lots of 20-50 by team.
Looking to have some custom cuts or plain custom cards built? PM me.

  • Gotcha so how cheap? Even if I throw in a HOFer or star?

The market for hockey autographs is pretty soft, mainly because getting hockey autographs in general is like shooting fish in a barrel. Hockey players are completely unlike the other three "major" US sports. As a group the are the most down to earth, accomodating athletes you will ever meet.

Add to that the fact that as a spectator sport hockey ranks just above wrestling in terms of popularity and the market just isn't that big.

Other than Gretzky, I'm not sure any other hockey players are worth getting encapsulated unless you're able to get a really low price.

So you have at least one point of data, in the recent past I've sold team lots of between 10-25 both auction and fixed price with mostly commons and minor stars. In hockey a "minor" star would still be a pretty good player, possibly even HOFer. On average the lots sell for between 25 cents and 75 cents per auto. Hockey collectors just won't pay big money for this stuff. I think you'll be holding on to the hockey stuff for a long time if you have to get $25K out of it unless the lot is just loaded with Gretzkys, Lemieux, Gordie Howe, Orr, Roy, etc.

Another data point, I've been working on a 1992-93 Upper Deck set signed and recently picked up a partial signed set of 235 cards that included two Gretzky's (one slabbed), two Lemieux, Hull, Jagr, Yzerman (now a non-signer), 3 Lidstroms, Forsberg, Kariya (another non-signer), and many other future Hall of Famers plus two deceased commons. Paid $165 for the lot at auction.

Ineteresting. I dont have to have a particular number......just thought they would have this type of value or more. I would love to contact you and pick your brain on the tough signers post 1991.

I would be intersted in Red Wings, checked out your Blue Ribbons and none meet my requirments. Just curious which two did you keep for yourself?
  • My two cents would be to meet someone in Canada who sets up at fleas/shows who can sell them in person. Find a person like that and work out some sort of a deal. Selling them on ebay? My carpal tunnel flares up just thinking about the work that would entail.
  • Yea eBay seems to be the route......as far as the Blue Ribbons.......Chuck Hunsinger my relative. I kept those. I purchased the lot just for him. I have not listed the 52 Parkies yet.
