Black X on Wax Boxes

Short story.....I got a friend who has about 1300 or so unopened non sport wax boxes, everything from 1977 Elvis to 1991 Desert Storm. I was helping him check out about how much he could expect to get if he sold them individually on ebay. He is actually meeting with a BBCE rep tomorrow that is passing through and may sell everything to them. In checking out the prices of what stuff is selling for on ebay, I noticed that a big number of them have a big black "X" on the front of the box and I have seen some of the sports from early years have them as well.
What exactly does that black X mean?
PS: I managed to get 3 boxes of 1987 Wrestlemania (of his 59 boxes he has) for helping him out.

IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

<< <i>Yep. Closeouts. I made several trips with a friend to Topps in Dureya(?) Pa. to buy closeouts. He bought several hundred cases of 1984 Football, 1984 Topps and OPC Hockey at $37.00 PER CASE! Thiose were the good old days. He paid me for helping by giving me 4 cases of product and four more at his $37.00 cost. Unfortunately, I boxed them out at shows anywhere from $5.00 to $150.00 per box. In hindsight I should have kept them sealed and safely stored. That would have made a great college fund for my son and daughter.

Wow, I'll say, LOL!
Also, that story shows that not all X out boxes are made from leftover partial boxes in the store...some of the X out cases were simply full cases from the factory that were taken out of the case and marked with an X at season's end, so those boxes are the same as they were before they were marked. I would imagine it would be difficult to tell which boxes are totally original and which are a compilation of packs.

The person at Topps explained about the Black X boxes and that is absolutely correct. It was a pretty neat experience visiting the Topps plant. The warehouse was huge and filled. I wish I could go back in time..........

I was unable to buy the deal, as we could not agree on a price.

I apologize if you felt I released any information that might have affected the negotiation as I had hoped BBCE would have bought the items. Perhaps it may be better in the future if I referred a different company in purchasing
Edited to add: Now that I have heard a different side of the story, I stand by my original belief that the post was not an issue in the negotiation. To be clear, I knew about this deal since I put the seller in contact with BBCE originally and knew about it from that method and not because of our "small" community of 40,000 people or because this "deal" was such a high dollar amount that the seller leaked out the information. I found it disturbing that such a big deal was made about a small discussion of a subject we all find interesting....sportscards.
