Black X on Wax Boxes

Short story.....I got a friend who has about 1300 or so unopened non sport wax boxes, everything from 1977 Elvis to 1991 Desert Storm. I was helping him check out about how much he could expect to get if he sold them individually on ebay. He is actually meeting with a BBCE rep tomorrow that is passing through and may sell everything to them. In checking out the prices of what stuff is selling for on ebay, I noticed that a big number of them have a big black "X" on the front of the box and I have seen some of the sports from early years have them as well.

What exactly does that black X mean?

PS: I managed to get 3 boxes of 1987 Wrestlemania (of his 59 boxes he has) for helping him out.

Black X boxes were closeouts by Topps (unsold or returned prodect from stores that were then sold at a discount)

The "x" boxes were closeouts and were marked so that dealers could not return them for credit. They may or may not be original boxes--some of them consist of a compilation of packs from different boxes. Personally, as unopened collector, I prefer boxes without a big black greasy X on the lid, but if you're a pack ripper it shouldn't make any real difference except that collation may be off if box consists of packs from different boxes.

Yep. Closeouts. I made several trips with a friend to Topps in Dureya(?) Pa. to buy closeouts. He bought several hundred cases of 1984 Football, 1984 Topps and OPC Hockey at $37.00 PER CASE! Thiose were the good old days. He paid me for helping by giving me 4 cases of product and four more at his $37.00 cost. Unfortunately, I boxed them out at shows anywhere from $5.00 to $150.00 per box. In hindsight I should have kept them sealed and safely stored. That would have made a great college fund for my son and daughter.

BBCE will give you top dollar and are are extremely fair when making an offer for your friends collection. I recently sold off a large portion of my junk wax collection to them and they gave me pretty close to what I figured they were worth. Piecing out and shipping 1300 wax boxes will become extremely time consuming and expensive if your friend decides to go the eBay route. Thats just my $0.02

    Wow, I'll say, LOL!

Also, that story shows that not all X out boxes are made from leftover partial boxes in the store...some of the X out cases were simply full cases from the factory that were taken out of the case and marked with an X at season's end, so those boxes are the same as they were before they were marked. I would imagine it would be difficult to tell which boxes are totally original and which are a compilation of packs.

The person at Topps explained about the Black X boxes and that is absolutely correct. It was a pretty neat experience visiting the Topps plant. The warehouse was huge and filled. I wish I could go back in time..........

I must say, it's a little disturbing to read about a deal I'm working on, before I've had the opportunity to buy it, and even more so from a third party. I guess the way word travels so fast in the internet age, it was bound to happen sooner or later. The community is pretty small, so secrets are hard to keep.

I was unable to buy the deal, as we could not agree on a price.

Well, it wasnt my intention to affect the deal in any way, but since I was the one who suggested he contact BBCE, it stands to reason that myself, as "the third party", already knew pretty much knew about the deal and what items were involved, so it wasnt a disturbing "internet" story spreading, rather I knew of what he had, including his old sports collections for quite some time as I had bought and sold with him for nearly 20 years now and live about a mile from him. I dont feel any inside information was leaked in any of my posts, in fact, the thread was started because of the black marks and not the "deal" itself, which was just a side story. I would have been happy had a deal worked out

I apologize if you felt I released any information that might have affected the negotiation as I had hoped BBCE would have bought the items. Perhaps it may be better in the future if I referred a different company in purchasing

Edited to add: Now that I have heard a different side of the story, I stand by my original belief that the post was not an issue in the negotiation. To be clear, I knew about this deal since I put the seller in contact with BBCE originally and knew about it from that method and not because of our "small" community of 40,000 people or because this "deal" was such a high dollar amount that the seller leaked out the information. I found it disturbing that such a big deal was made about a small discussion of a subject we all find interesting....sportscards.
