Question for 72 Topps Experts

I know little about 72 Topps cards. I just picked this card up, because I thought the card looked really good on EBAY, and had enough EBAY bucks, that it would pay for just about all of it. I got this Ryan in the mail today, and nearly fell over with how nice this card is. There is a little more side to side movement that I am normally accustomed to. Is this normal with the issue, or could this be a trimmed card? The corners are all razor sharp. Aside from the print dot in the G on Angels, this card seems like a fantastic bump candidate. I would appreciate anyone familiar with this year to comment. If you have nothing to add, but "the card looks trimmed, etc"........please don't bother. Thanks in advance!

Old holder (pre .5) is a plus.

Little OC t-b, afore mentiond print dot, and a small cardboard imperfection (stain?) in the left border about 1" from the bottom.

Nice 8 overall, wouldn't be horrible in an 8.5 holder either, don't think it gets a 9 on centering T-B, but it isn't out of the question. I'd take a cahnce and sub for reveiw IN the slab, I wouldn't crack it.

I agree the T-B centering will keep it at an 8. Sharp card.

    Matt,

I checked several of my 72's in my PC and a couple of them (including one of my Ryans) have the same appearance as yours. I don't think it's trimmed, it's just they way they are.

    Great looking card BTW!!!!

Guys, the bump is more of a secondary question. I'm more concerned about the L and R movement. Is that typical with this series? The corners are so sharp, coupled with the movement, just wonder if trimming has occurred or is this typical movement for 72's.

For some reason, I've always thought 72's looked taller and thinner than normal on first glance. I think it's an illusion due to the unique border.

    Matt,
I've got lots of 1972 PSA 8's and many 9's. That's a nice 8 in my opinion. It might not bump, but it sure has a shot in my opinion. I've got some 1972 PSA 9's with major dots and discoloration, that even after review were kept at the 9 grade.
Many of my 72's slide around a bit in the holder, in fact many of my PSA graded cards slide around.

Sharp card Matt! I think you might have a shot at a bump though centering is a bit low T/B. Worth a shot but this card will be a bit more difficult than a common to get bumped.

I don't think there's a problem with the card moving in the holder. MANY cards move in these holders.

I am not an expert on the 72's but i judge the centering by the two sides and the bottom, I ignore the "bulge" under the players name. To me this is a near perfectly centered card.

Also agree that because it is a star player it might be graded more harshly than a common.

Beautiful card, try sending it in for a review. I think it has a shot at an 8.5.

Very nice looking card Matt. I can't help with the L/R question because I am not very familiar with the set. However, are you sure it belongs in an "8" holder considering that LARGE yellow fisheye above the "A" on his hat? LOL

Looks like an 8.5 or 9 to me but man I just can't stand the look of the 1972 TOPPS set, ugliest set from the vintage years in my opinion. It's a sharp RYAN nonetheless

I've submitted quite a few pack fresh 72 Topps singles over the years and I can say with certainty that PSA prefers a bit more real estate below the name plate for a Mint 9 grade. That card is very sharp for the grade but I am virtually certain it graded an 8 due to the lower T/B centering. That fisheye itself is not enough to keep it from grading Mint 9. In fact, I believe that is a relatively common print defect for this particular card as you can see from this example:

Actually, this card appears a bit short in the holder...Matt, did you measure this card to see if it is proper size?

It seems to measure, I bumped the 72 PSA 10 that's for sale on the BST. Particularly when turned over on the back, they measure up. I see the point now on T to B centering.
