I recently sold 30 1996 ASEs to a very professional and patient buyer (Jay Rudo) for that reason. I used the proceeds in that case to buy 2 Morgans: 1880-S PCGS MS66+PL 1881-S PCGS MS67 Next month,I will be submitting these to CAC with some others.
It's not the milk spotting that stopped me in the SAE series, it's the " no funds " department that put a halt on these. I'm sure when I get back on my feet I'll continue the stretch. I love the Silver American Eagle program.

I still buy them, but only as bullion and for graduation presents. I have a single 1987 proof ASE that got me started into coin collecting after I bought it in high school. I can't see myself buying any proofs, but primarily because I have far more interest in historically interesting business-strike coins.
At one time I had (4) complete sets of the proof issues. A set for each grandson. The spotting was horrible. Over time, not more than a dozen of them did not develop spotting. I would seperate out the spotted ones, sell 'em..pretty soon I was down to less than a single set..and after a few months, they too spotted!
I sold my slabbed Siver Eagles simply because I needed the money. Milk Spotting had nothing to do with it. Chasing MS/PR70 seemed exasperating and wasteful as I've allowed myself to get spread way too thin in the collecting arena.
Lots of pot's, lot's of fires, but little money.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
You know what guy's, I was just thinking, what If these milk spots turn into a goldmine? Remember, not too long ago we felt the same about " that darn Tarnishing, this is destroying the value of my coin!!!" Well,Toning now is big money! Who knows?

I like the burnished unc. finishes, so I've moved over to those.

The name is LEE!
Milk spots had nothing to do with the decision - but it is nice to know I don't have that risk anymore.

I gave up because of milk spots (and toning as well).
I have a few proof issues still in OGP and an ms example for every year since '86 none of which have any spotting whatsoever.
