Just can't follow this Ebay logic:

"To help keep the eBay community safe, enhance bidder privacy, and protect our members from fraudulent emails, eBay has changed how User IDs display on the bid history page. Only you and the seller of the item can view your User ID, all other members will see anonymous user IDs, such as Bidder 1."

Ebay doesn't care. I've reported fake cards, as well as counterfeit (bad fake) watches, and Ebay let the auctions run. A couple weeks later the seller has negative feedback from a buyer stating that the card/watch was fake. If I could have contacted the high bidder before hand or if Ebay actually responded to the "Report an Item" warning, it may have been avoided.

  • I sometimes wish we could see the bidders id to let people know if there is a scam taking place.

Back when I first started on ebay I put a bid in on a Roy Campanella signed 3x5 index card or so I thought. Somebody contacted me and said watch out because it wasn't signed, but a rubber stamp copy of his signature. It was early in the auction and I started doing a little research and turns out Roy was known to do this (don't know if it was before or after his accident) and there was another seller on a different site selling one that he said was a rubber stamp auto. Both 3x5's looked exactly the same. My one and only bid retraction and am very greatful that somebody pointed that out to me otherwise I would have lost some good money.

A few years ago, there was a discussion here about a fake Pujols Bowman auto. I think it was Fandango and that Musial guy that used to be here that did all the detective work. I sent a message to the high bidder and actually got a hold of him before he paid. He was so grateful that someone took the time to let him know that he sent me a graded Pujols rookie he had an extra of. I still have it too. Nice gift from a stranger.

I talked to Ebay back when they first made that change, and they sold me on it being a good idea. In hindsight? Not so much.

FWIW, their rationale was to keep other sellers from contacting bidders/buyers and undercutting an auction, and to make sure that underbidders wer not contacted to do off-site deals "without Ebay protections"

I had a similar situation. I saw a guy bidding on a signed 1991 Olympics card. The card was of an Olympian that died in the 1980's. The bidder was extremely happy that I brought it to his attention. I told ebay as well. They did nothing. I contacted the seller, and he assured me it was authentic. Sigh...

Ebay has no control over the fraud and all they can do is regulate the good guys. There is no reason to hide the bidders other than to keep the ebay lawsuits down from the scammers. I have a story like most of us here: A guy with like 4 or 5 feedback was selling some pretty rare and old autographs on what looked like old stlye parchment paper or something. But a little research showed that this guy bought that old paper just a few weeks earlier and then was tracing autos or something. A few emails gave bidders the heads-up and prevented the loss up front from skyrocketing. It took ebay a couple of weeks to catch up with this scammer. It still amazes me how folks are so trusting and will buy just about anything. I still look for St Mary or the face of St Peter to pop up on a slice of bread. When it does, it will go for big bucks and I am selling

An old friend used to tell me stories about a job he had "assistant managing" a topless club. he said a good night was basically any night where you didn't have to bounce a customer and where you didn't have to break up a cat fight in the back.

Same with Ebay - a good day is one where the money comes in and they don't have too much turmoil - like an irate seller complaining that his auction got pulled without proof. They just don't want to get sued/threatened/harrassed by anyone, so they only pull auctions that they are 100% sure are "pullable" because they CLEARLY violate a rule.

At the end of the day, the problem could be solved if there werent so many people trying so hard to get something for nothing. If there were any drug users, there wouldnt be drug dealers and in this case if there werent so many people wanting to make a quick buck, there wouldnt be any scammers able to sell cards.

In the end, I fault ebay for allowing the sale, the seller for trying to sell it and any potential buyer who buys a $1000 card for $30 and thinks "they got a good deal" instead of "I think I got ripped off"
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

which hides alot of fraud as well. I never understood it either
  • I hear you but there are and there always will be those people and same for drugs, there will always be users so there will always be sellers, thats 100% fact, cant stop it. it is nice to help a few that you can catch though and expose them for what they are, peace
