Are you a methodical collector or collect serendipitously?

Is your collection one of strict purpose- blinders on- forging ahead, with a distinct plan and agenda or do you collect what you like without a lot or rhyme or reason?

    Serendipitously, oddly and curiously enough.

I have a plan, but it's random luck if something rare I need comes up intersects with I have the money and am in the mood to spend it on a coin

I can't answer right now as my mind shifted to thoughts of Kate Beckinsale instead of coins after reading your thread title image

I'd have to describe myself as a "strict purpose- blinders on- forging ahead, with a distinct plan and agenda" collector, mostly because it sounds so much nicer than 'anal'. I collect the Capped Bust and Liberty Seated half dimes by die marriage, and also by die state, and strive for a consistent grade of AU-58 for all. For the Flowing Hair and Draped Bust half dimes, which I also collect by die marriage and by die state, I am attempting to acquire them all in a uniform grade of VF-20. That has been my 'strict purpose' for thirty years. Of course, locating some of the rarest die marriages has been serendipitous, to say the least.

I try to be methodical in my approach to coins, but serendipities often nullify those efforts. In other words,
no matter how diligent the search, it's usually something I'm not looking for which I discover.

I have a very strict focus. I can't wait to be rich and buy whatever I like, whenever I like.

I never deviate from my plan/focus no matter how pretty or cheap it is.

I do both but as the years have been passing I have been more and more focused. Still, when I see something outside my usual field that attracts me and it affordable, I'll get it.

I am definitely a methodical collector. Don't know how anyone collecting Bust Series varieties could be otherwise.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
