1986 Gretzky O-Pee-Chee Hand Cut Hoard of PSA 10

I resisted bidding on one of these that sold for about $430 and saw the seller relisted, at first thought non-payer, but checked the cert # and noticed they were different. Figured it was time to check the pop report and look at the number of 9's and 10's. Looks like this issue is about to take a nose dive. Just re-confirms the adage the time to sell a pop 1 is when it is a pop 1. I don't have a good capture tool, but in case this isn't easy to read, 32 - 9's and 16 - 10's.

Card No. Name 8 9 10 Total

F Wayne Gretzky 11 32 16 73

Edit to add, owner is likely ebayer - the coolestgameonice

Holy crap. I had the only psa 10 for about two years and sold it about two months ago on a premonition. From 1 to 16 PSA 10's in one month? 32 9's from about 4 9's in one month? Wow.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

My head is spinning about the # of cards submitted. I didn't realize there were that many uncut sheets of 1986-87 OPC out there. I can't recall another instance where the pop of a Gretzky card has blown up in a similar way. I'm glad I got out when I did. I used the funds to help buy my PSA 8 Johnny Bucyk rookie.
  • In 1986 o-pee-chee produced an abundant amount of box bottom sheets. These can all get high grades because there are no box folds.

In 1985-86, o-pee-chee did not produced sheets. They produced extra boxes without packs. These extra boxes had box folds in them, thus reducing
    the chances of high grades.

In 1987 o-pee-chee did not produce extra boxes, they produced box bottom sheets, but most of the sheets were not printed correctly. If these sheets were cut up
today, the backs would not align properly with the fronts, and they would all grade miscut. The number of sheets that were actually printed correctly (which would give
us mint cards), are thought to be less then 10.

One of the questions that remains with 1986-87 o-pee-chee box bottoms is why didn't the Mario Lemieux card pop higher along with the Gretzky ? Did this person only
cut up the Gretzky's and discard the rest of the sheets ? I know the feeling, as I had the Gretzky and Lemieux boxes from 85, and didn't have many of the other boxes.
