Which one to keep?

With my numismatic budget being stretched by summer activities, I am at a point where if I have duplicates in the collection - i would sell one off and add to my new coin fund. I've already done this with a few dates (1804, 1806, 1816, 1819) and now looking at these two 1807's. My goal is to complete at least one of the 5 8 Reales registry sets I'm working on. With that in mind, one of the 1807's is an MS62, but bright and hairlined (not something I would normally have in my collection, but the MS grade looks good in the registry), while the other is an AU58 with some great reverse color! Selling the MS62 would also give me more wiggle room in the budget to add another AU toner to the sets.

Hmm...

Decisions, decisions!

2. PCGS MS62

I like the top one, and i also have kept the lower graded of two coins just because it looked so much better.

I've truly never heard of such a thing.

Despite the hairlines I would keep the MS example if it were my choice.

It always has been my understanding that you go with the more attractive coin, regardless of the grade.

I will buck the trend and everything that I believe in

If these were my coins and asked to choose- I would pick the second because neither coin is original from where I sit based I what I see in the images. The second has enough undisturbed lustre (from potential circulation) on the high points of the design to the point I would be more satisfied with the second-

Over the long term, the second coin will likely produce the better result in terms of appeal and what is considered desirable by collectors. Please keep in mind, it is difficult to write this and my thoughts are soley based on the images presented

I like the au58. The surfaces have a more appealing look to me.

I agree. I like the look of the AU58 better.

AU58 has more eye appeal, IMO.

I'm torn on this one. Please keep in mind that my comments are based on knowing virtually NIL about the series in question and its grading characteristics.

Normally, I would have gone with the AU58 as the keeper, as I tend to prefer color, but in this case I chose the MS62 for a few reasons:

    1. Even though it is hairlined, it appears from the photos to have a bit of PL action going, which one normally doesn't encounter, from what I've seen.

    2. I think the AU58 is overgraded by a smidgeon. The AU58 has more wear on it than a 58 should, especially on the obverse. I see it more as a 53/55.

I have no idea what the cost/value differential is between the two coins, but in terms of condition rarity, even with the hairlines the AU62 is going to be more scarce.

    Just my 2 cents...

That's what I love about you guys - clearly outlined points and arguments. People agree to disagree in a civil way.

And Dan, I agree with your comment about the AU58. The obverse should have downgraded it a few points. I have a couple of AU55's with more luster.

P.S. based on your comments, I think I'll hold on to both for the time being. image

I would keep both if given the choice. I would normally keep the toned coin but in this case, if given the choice to keep only one, the toned coin would be the first one to go. I love toned coins but this one doesn't have enough detail left to merit the grade, IMHO.

Regardless of the hairlines, the MS62 coin has far better detail. Its almost mirror like devices make it a real standout coin. With devices like that, any blemishes are going to become more obvious.

Finding beautiful toning is a lot easier than finding mirror like devices for many Latin American series. My advice, if given the choice, stick with the 62. image

I vote that you sell both of them and wait for one that you like enough that - unlike these two coins - you won't be tempted to sell next time you're short on cash.

I voted for the AU58, but should have said "keep both of them".

Lovely toning on the 58, but I'll bet the 62 has a bit of luster in hand... and it's MS.

Having duplicates in something like that is a dilemma I'd love to face.

Hey, Andy. I thought about it and you might be onto something here. There are only a few coins from my primary collection that I would be ok to part with to raise some cash and I think it's a good indicator that I am not completely happy with the coins for whatever reasons. Since I was considering selling either, I think I will get rid of both as soon as I find a nice example for that year.

In fact, I might have found that better example today. Just received a package from Harlan J Berk with a very lustrous high-end AU 1807 that I am rather liking so far. It has a strikethrough, as well, that kind of adds to the overall character.

I'll post some images tonight when I'm home from work.

On a related note, I haven't seen too many strikethrough's on portrait 8 Reales over the last 6 years (2-3 at most), and now I have 2 strikethrough's waiting to be submitted and there is another one for sale by DeiGratia on BST.

Do you guys know if PCGS would attribute a strikethrough on the label if you pay for mint error service?
  • DeiGratiaDeiGratia Posts: 273 ✭✭✭
Yup I have 2 8 Reales with StrikeThrough

The first is the 1799 which is on hold pending funds.

    The second is a 1800
