I just don't get it. I don't get the hating of these sets either - or the anti-moderns comments in general. For that matter, I don't get the beating on the Mint over these as well.
As to the sets, they are beautiful. The coins and the OGP will be great as well, as we saw with the 25th Anniv. sets. What's not to like?? Think the price is too high? Don't buy. Why beat on the set?
As to all of the anti-moderns's comments "NONE for me!!!!", "no Modern crap, etc" - how many times to moderns haters have to post this stuff?? Why do they do it? Does it make them feel good? Do they resent the profits/appreciation in moderns vs some of the classics? There are some very popular classics which bore me to tears. I don't go on threads about them and post this. Why do so many classics collectors feel compelled to do this on our threads?? If you've got nothing nice to say.... Did their mommas not teach them this?
Beyond that, were not the Pan Pac slugs, the matte proof Saints, etc. "modern crap" at the time?
As Eric and many others have pointed out, for those who like to make $ in numismatics moderns are hard if not impossible to beat. Many of the regulars on the moderns threads can attest to this personally, I being amongst them. Moderns haters: how have the classics which you purchased in 2008 done against my herd of 2008 W buffs??

As to the Mint: I've certainly been very, very critical of the Mint on many occasions - the pucks, the 25th sets, etc, etc. In this case, the Mint did a great job. They took the heat from the 25th sets seriously. The manner in which they sold these sets allowed anyone and everyone who wanted them to buy them and to buy as many as they want. The point (from The Mint's perspective at least) is to make collector not flipper coins. Any and all collectors who wanted these got as many as they wished to buy at issue cost. What's the problem here? They did good (for once!).

Because they need to feel superior and "one of the cool guys". Just look at the pride that anti math or science or history slogans get gleefully repeated. Like it's a badge of honor to not have paid the least bit of attention in school. Proud that they don't know how many feet in a mile or how many states there are or what countries border the United States. Or are they really uninformed as the make out? Probable not but that need to fit in is hard to resist. Fine if you don't like the artistry and craftsmanship of modern issues but explain why, don't just use dismissive terms like "crap". It's beneath you. Your post will likely be received with dismissal as being arrogant and kinda ignorant then passed over with out another thought. Rant over.
I've bought lots of SAE's (raw and slabbed), and the last I've seen with milk spots were in 2006.

Not low mintage? I think ~250k is a LOT lower than the millions of ASEs that are normally produced. I ordered a set two days ago when it appeared the total sets would be <300k. I think the haters of the set will be unpleasantly surprised to see the price on the aftermarket.

The statement would be appropriate since, as was mentioned above, there is only one proof ASE since 1986 with a lower mintage and of all the collector ASE's of different types (MS/PF/RP) since that year this set has the 5th lowest mintage out of all those 35 issues
For me, buying 70's is kind of like buying an extended warranty. I'd llike to think it is a permanent extended warranty I am eager to get this set. I hope the TPG turnaround is quick!!

There is really no reason to fear milk spots--buy PR70s. They are guaranteed against milk spots. Problem solved.
