Unusual Foreign Coin Find

I have a mystery question regarding a couple of foreign coins that I found while metal detecting in my mother's garden area in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I found two similar coins in the same general area of her garden. They are unusual since they appear to be clipped. Both are from Austraila, are similar coins, and were found buried in her yard. The house was built in 1946, and our family has lived there since 1956. This is a real mystery to me. Do any of you have any thoughts? Why would they be clipped? When I found the first one
3 years ago, I didn't think that much of it. The second one, found May of 2012, makes me wonder. Have a look and let me know what you think. Steve

Pretty neat finds. Looks to be post-mint damage but for what reason - I don't know.

I don't see any evidence of the Blakesley effect, which should be significant on a clip of that size. The clip also seems like it might not be the right diameter.

Somebody was playing with a punch.

They are not errors.

Looking at the Obverse it appears the culprit drew a semicircle on the piece before the cut or punch as a guild.

Agreed. No blakesley on the opposite edge, which should be obvious for this sized clip.
