Original Bankwrapped Rolls of 1982, 1981, and 1980 Lincoln Cents

Should I open them up and look for gems? What are the odds of finding DDO/DDR on the 1980 and 1982? These are 100 percent original rolls, so am wondering what to do with the bunch. I know they are hours of entertainment. I bought them all for face value, so there are no dollars lost if I open them.

Open them and see what you have.

    I would not dump/spend the 82 coins.

I don't know about cents, but you can get a decent premium for nice looking 82 and 83 nickels since there were no mint sets.

edit: it doesn't look like bu rolls of 82 cents sell for much of a premium - search - dump/spend may not be bad advice image

good point, but if they will be searched then likely any nice ones will be kept already. in short, is there a market for a roll of MS60 82 coins?

I just edited my post above to say that, no, it doesn't look like there is. your advice is good, it turns out image

Here's another idea...I purchased several BU rolls of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies for a couple year period from about 1999 - 2002. I paid face value for all of these rolls. I don't know exactly why I purchased them, but they have been stowed away for just over 10 years now and I suspect they will never be of any value during my lifetime. However, I am going to leave them to my grandchildren....some of whom haven't been born yet. Who knows what they will be worth in another 50 years or so. Or, perhaps my grandchildren can pass them on. My point is, perhaps you could save them and then pass them on to a family member.

The 1980-81 cents, and possibly the 1982, are mostly copper rather than zinc, and currently have a metal value of about 2.3 cents each. Some people are saving them for this reason. (Currently illegal to melt, however.)

Assuming the rolls are all P mint:

If any 82 rolls are small date plain zinc you should check them for the rare DDR, only a few ever found and worth thousands in 65:

    82 DDR on Coppercoins

Check the 80 rolls for the nice DDO:

    80 DDO on Coppercoins

The 82 plain SD zinc or copper rolls are worth a premium, the LD plain zinc is also a small premium. Most of the 82-P rolls are LD copper and not worth any premium so see what you have. Most 82 bank rolls are solid, not mixed types so I'd just look at the end coins to tell.

Not much to find in 81 rolls.

Other than what I mentioned I'd spend them or sell em for whatever you can get.
Someone might want them because they're copper but the premium is small.

    Or

If they are all OBW and you don't care to search them you might put them on ebay and see what you get, maybe sell them as a lot.
