What day should I attend the ANA in Philly?

mariner67mariner67 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭
I have never been to a coin show before.
I arrive late Monday to visit family.
I "collect" gold/silver bullion and love also 90% WLHs.
I still have my old run of the mill general collection from 50 yrs ago as a kid.
I would enjoy seeing older US issues, errors/varieties and am looking forward to enjoying a day at the show seeing all the eye candy.
Any suggestions for a newbie?
I think I would be a fool not to go as I will be in town even though I am really not a serious collector but I do appreciate the beauty of coins.
Much appreciated.

As early in the show as you can....

edit: if this is your first show prepare to be overwhelmed.

If you are not a serious collector (I.e. don't need first pick of coins), then plan your attendance based on any talks (Numismatic Theater) or events you may like to attend.

You can check the schedule at http://www.worldsfairofmoney.com/ as it gets closer to the convention.

Also remember there is an admission fee of $6/day for non-ANA members.

With what you're carrying, many dealers won't much want you at their tables until Friday unless it's bullion, and some others but little more. image

But there are plenty with whom bullion is an immediately available option. imageimage You'll be cordially welcomed there and all others beyond rows 3-5 from the outset of the show.

If you're not carrying bullion, all the others will still be glad to get a chance to make a buck.

Wearing mustard entitles you to special service and pricing. Think of it as a secret fraternity handshake.

No matter what, you'll have plenty of opportunities to see things that will excite your eyes and stimulate your brain.image

    Enjoy.

It doesn't sound like you're after anything that would be really hard to find, so pick a day when you have the most free time or there's a club meeting you want to attend.

You'll definitely be overwhelmed very quickly, so plan ahead to take it easy at the show - don't feel you have to walk down every aisle or look at every dealer's case.

If you have some books by living authors, you might be interested in seeing whether they'll be at the show and then getting some autographs.

(I always like to have my books autographed when I can.)

I agree with this. The show is so big that there will be plenty of things to look at/attend during any day you chose to go to the convention.

Another thing you really must do is go see the exhibits. I highly recommend it. Check out the web site to see when they'll be available for public viewing.

If you are primarily seeking bullion and are not sensitive to spot price movements then there is no need to get to the show as early as possible. The last day of the show isnt the best day to go but any other day should be okay.

Expect to be overwhelmed any day you go. Don't feel like you have to do everything, and don't feel compelled to buy/sell unless you have already made plans to do so.
