Franklin Proofs- Pre1955

For you Franklin Half proof experts, the question is this-

In the event the reverse is stronger and capable of being a Deep Cam and the contrast on the obvers is weaker- weaker to the point that the obverse is a marginal CAM at best, does the reverse actually work against even a cam grade?

I ask mainly because I can see the grader thinking the reverse is terrific and obverse is marginal- and that difference reduces the grade in that it does not get a cam-

If that premise is reasonable, would it at least be a strong candidate for a plus?

They grade as to the weakest point. So if obverse is Dcam and reverse is Cam, it will get Cam. If the reverse is neither Cam nor Dcam, it will get the standard PR designation. The + has to be with the grade, not eye appeal or other designations.

sometimes pcgs will assign a plus grade for eye appeal/color.

although i know NGC will give a coin a Star(*) in such cases, i always thought the grading rule -of-thumb was that the Obverse won't necessarily raise the grade but the reverse can certainly lower it.

But in clarity, PCGS reports the plus grade will not be attributed UNLESS the coin is close toward the next grade up AND has eye appeal. image

From my experience, both sides have to be "all there" for the CAM or DCAM designation to be awarded by PCGS. And as others have said, the lower designation that exists on both sides will prevail.

I have no problem with lower side getting the grade and that is the way it should be- The real question is when there is such a significant difference between the obverse and reverse in terms of cam/deep cam- does the stronger reverse have such a negative impact to the eye of the grader to even think the obverse may not even cam? The reverse on this one is very, very sharp and is easily a deep cam and the obverse on a good day may get the cam
