I won an ebay auction earlier today. I have not paid yet but the seller has marked the item shipped and uploaded tracking. Interesting.

my seller was one with 5 days after cleared payment stuff
So to answer the members question of "why wait?", the above should give you what you are looking for.
To maintain seller discount, tracking info has to be uploaded within 24 hrs.
Seller may have known there would be a delay in getting this info within 24 hrs. so he posted incorrect info that he plans on correcting when he has the correct number.
Keep an eye on the tracking number, you will probably see it change. From the paypal details page one is able to select "edit tracking info." Tracking info uploaded/changed in paypal is automatically posted in ebay.
If someone is sending their shipments registered and they make a sale on Sat., they are faced with not being able to ship until Mon. when the post office reopens. They are almost forced to follow the above procedure if they wish to keep seller fee discounts. Same applies if a seller is out of town when sale occurs.
Remote possibility:
Seller is not going to ship. He had access to a tracking number for delivery to your city that he plans on using to prove delivery after you file a claim for non receipt. To determine if this is the case click on the tracking number and check it's status. If it shows delivery to your city check the delivery date which will most likely be before your purchase. If this is the case call paypal, explain the situation and have them click on the tracking number. The fact that seller is showing delivery before the purchase was even made will be enough for them to take action at their end. The one time this happened to me, paypal made immediate refund to me and went after the seller. From this experience I learned to always check status of tracking numbers as soon as I see them posted in MY EBAY.
