Baltimore show

Normally, one thinks of this show as predominantly US. While true, I'll share my experiences in this forum.

I arrived Thursday early afternoon, and promptly went to look for TomB to image two of my hammered pennies. Then, I spent some time chatting with njcoincrank (cuz he's based there). He (Shamu) has the most amazing Mexico 8R type coin. Chatted with another US dealer of high-end material that the show was slow on retail traffic. Well, it was still Thursday!

I then made my way to NEN to look at, and acquire, a real nice silver crown-sized piece. More on that when I get home. Walked around some more, had a one-way argument with Shish because he failed to do something as promised.

Then I made my way to Aspen Park to look at his world coins, especially his small grouping of common (but nice) Anglo-Saxon hammered pennies. Yes, I picked one up, but more on this when I get home. Also made my way to Tom Cederlind's booth, but he had nothing for me. York also not there. image

Dinner at Ruth's Chris not far from ESPN Zone. Ugh. Walked there in the stifling mugginess. image

Friday started with breakfast with crypto79 and then the customary LSCC meeting. Interesting topics from the meeting, but light-side in nature so I won't go into it.

After the LSCC meeting, walked around some more. Ran into Shish again, who got me a discount on a pair of loupes (I lost them at the last Baltimore show). All is forgiven.

Eventually made my way to Steve Album's booth to pick up some nondescript dark side stuff. Joe Lang seemed busy much of the time I was there.

Back in my room to rest and escape the terrible heat and humidity. Ugh.

There is a JRCS meeting at 4pm, but I am done and am already thinking about going home.

I always liked the Baltimore shows. When they coincided with my trips through Balto on the way to bass-fishing and deer hunting in the Spring and Fall, I always found lots of nice Canadian there. A few dealers from up this way are always there, but I see all their stuff up here by T.O. Some of my best finds have been in Baltimore.

Super quiet here on Saturday noon. As usual I never find anything but fun to look.
Saw the "Battle Born" collection soon for sale and was completely UNDERWHELMED. IMO they cheated like monsters on the grades and there were coins graded in 62 an 63 that looked bad. Similar for the SLQ quarters on display next to them although many hyper graded.

No real darkside highlights for sale although I saw an 1864 crosslet penny red-brown with PL surfaces, ungraded and evidently from Spink in thei glory days.....

Don't know how that typo came to be...

I don't know much about it. I think Bill said it's a type piece, a common coin in an otherwise VERY uncommon condition. (I concur on the superlative quality.)

Best to ask him about it. He's a member.

I'll post more on my newps later. I'm at a party.

Crikeys! What were they asking for the 1864 crosslet?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Yea, nice but NOT for sale. I would have to say if it were
mine it would be tempting to see what it would fetch at one of the big London auction houses at Coinex time. ? maybe 5k pounds??

In retrospect re: the show - if going were not a habit I'd skip the next Summer Whitman show.

Regarding the show, I hadn't been to a Baltimore summer show in years. I had forgotten how uncomfortable I'd be. I'm also contemplating not attending this time next year.

There are some terrific medals, world coins and world currency to see and buy at Baltimore

If you are unable to find something to buy, you are not looking hard enough or the want list is too short

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
