Obviously a PR stunt to drive sales. Any bets on how long it takes Perth Mint to melt this behemoth? image

What, nobody interested in investing $51 million in a single gold coin the size of a real-life giant panda? image

And they can make the gold into coins with a special hallmark that signifies

"Formerly part of the coin that made the Guinness Book of World Records!"

Didn't Australia or Canada do this same thing a couple of years back?

IIRC, they're cast, not struck. Call me a purist, but regardless of size, if it's not struck I don't really see it as a coin.

Why would you expend all of that effort to make it and then melt it?

Just a matter of time before they need to cut into it. It'll never sell. They will melt and make regular-sized coins for sale. Matter of time.
