Thinking about Cal Ripken a little

Jeter is superior. Ripken was a longevity guy, the average wasn't all that. Great streak but the longevity put up the numbers, Jeter puts up numbers with talent

One thing I can say about Jeter, he's had some of the hottest beards I've ever seen!

Ripken was a superior defender. Jeter's defense is below replacement.

They were both OK, but Jason Bartlett has redefined the SS position for the Padres this year

I realize this a troll thread....but it reminded me of a topic that has crossed my mind. Its interesting to me that a lot of the most highly collected players from the 80's were not highly collected during their prime, at least not in my hood. Specifically players like Ripken and Ozzie Smith. I usually would not separate these guys from the commons. This would have been in the 87-90 era. I think towards the end of this time period I did start to pull out Ripkens but no one really wanted them. Kirby Puckett was also not very collected other than his rookie card. The players that it seems everyone wanted never made the Hall but still have a pretty good following....Mattingly, Gooden, Strawberry, Bo Jackson.

As a kid who was into baseball cards in the late 80s and early 90s, Ripken's cards were pretty popular in Sacramento, California. Pulling a Ripken from a 50 cent pack was like pulling a $1 bill (which is quite a bit when you're a kid).

Maybe not in your hood, but Ripken has always been in the top 3 through the late 80s on (during playing years). My hood was NE Ohio. I think it has a lot to do with what region you live in.
  • I can't say he was ever overrated but he was a star....then he won the MVP....then the consecutive game record....so over time...he became a baseball legend but that's how it works

  • << <i>Great streak but the longevity put up the numbers, Jeter puts up numbers with talent >>

Ripken's "numbers" compared to the average shortstop from the 80s are superior to Jeter's compared to the average shortstop over the past 20 years. Ripken's defense was one of the best in the league most years. Jeter's has been below average. That is based entirely around talent with nothing to do with longevity
  • Not saying Ripken wasn't great just DJ is bettet
  • Saying whatever greatness he had came from longevity instead of talent sure is a backhanded way of saying it
  • Can't we just say that they are both great players?

What I like about Ripken the most is that he's one of the few superstar athletes left who hasn't turned out to be a complete piece of crap of a human being off the field.
