Help! Is this SGC holder tampered with?

Hi, I bought this 1948 leaf jackie robinson rookie last week. I have a few concerns with it, however. I am wondering whether the damage on the edge of the holder indicates tampering. The card exhibits very little frosting, a few light spots here and there, but no completely frosted or cracked areas consistent with a case which has been tampered with. I called SGC and they said that the card was graded way back in 2000. The card itself looks fine, I believe it to be authentic but a second opinion never hurts. I heard that one way of telling if a holder has been tampered with is to hold the opposite sides and twist lightly in opposite directions and listen for cracking/sliding sounds. I hear nothing when I try this method. However the chip at the top worries me. I heard that similar chips can be the result of the sonic sealing process. Is this true? I mean if somebody took a flathead screwdriver or something and broke it from the top and peeled it down, wouldnt it show at least a little bitof frosting at the point where the chip is? I see no frosting at that point, just a few sporadic light sections down the sides of the case. The card itself looks fine, looks EX to me, no creases, wrinkles, or anything like that. Why would somebody crack open a case with an EX card in it and replace it with an authentic card in the same condition?Ive seen fake cards before and I generally know what to look for, so I am confident that this is real, but I would like a second opinion on this case. Thanks for your help. I have a few pictures:

From my experience SGC cases show quite visible indicators when a attempt is made to reseal. If I just saw the case (not the card) I would say it's okay. Seeing what the card is I (like you) would want to hear some more opinions. So basically my comment is worthless I guess.
  • Looks somewhat normal to me too. If it wasn't a high profile card, I wouldn't be concerned. Because of the value of the card, I would want to know for sure before I bought it or tried to sell it.
  • Yeah, thats really the only reason I am worried, theres a lot of money on the line here!

How does the card itself look? Any evidence of alteration? Does the card look real? Does it fit the grade?

  • The card itself looks good, its a pretty low 5 but there are no creases, wrinkles, anything like that. The card has no signs of trimming or alteration, as far as I can tell.

flip it to SGC for a reslab?
  • Ive thought about doing that but since it is an old slab they wouldn't guarantee that it would come back a 5.

hard to tell as thats how all SGC cases look like.
Would have to see it in hand to make a good judgement.
  • Nothing wrong with that case. I have over 100 SGC slabs and you'll see that on some. If it had been tampered with, it would be a lot worse. If you want it re-slabbed send it to SGC and tell them you want it re-cased, not crossed, or not reviewed. They'll re-case with the same grade. With that high dollar card, I'd call Earl in customer service and go over it with him and he can better direct you how to address it so it gets the proper care and attention. I think it's about $5 to re-case.

I agree with trex.............there seems to be NO tampering. I only use SGC and you would notice a tampered Slab.

Card looks normal and slab looks normal from what I can see. The top of the slab has the mold marks from when the slab 1/2s were separated from the extra mold plastic.
If youve ever cracked out a SGC slab, they do frost and crack and it would be tough to cover that up IMO

PS. all Leaf baseball cards were ONLY issued in 1949, even though some of them have a 1948 copyright by design...
PSA and SGC should actually change this misleading info of putting "1948-49" on the flip.

    looks good.

also - I can't believe they won't reholder that for you, it's not that old of a holder.
  • Card and slab look good, you can send it in to SGC and for $5 they will reholder it for you. I have used the service a few times with no problems.
