Are PSA 7 cellos with no stars worth saving or are they prime ripping material?

I got a few PSA 7 and one PSA 6 cellos from 75 thru 78. No stars showing. Would you crack and rip?

I personally don't rip open anything, but I have a feeling that I am in the minority in this case.

If I were to rip them open, I'd pick ones where the corners haven't bent too bad over the years and that have nicely centered cards on top and/or back.

    Good luck!!!

70s cellos are tightly wrapped and because card count is lower than early 70s, the likelihood of corner dings throughout the pack is fairly high.

Great question! Not much value in the cellos in PSA 7 with no stars showing, but also odds on pulling a mint high valued card are not good either.

I would think that long term, as people rip cellos their scarcity and value will rise. It might take a long time and not be very much, but remember when they were worth NOTHING without a star player on top?

I agree with cpamike that if you rip, pick the cellos with the best corners and best centering.

Sell them and use the money to buy a couple of packs with your favor players on top or use the money to buy rack packs and rip those
either would give the best chance at succes or personal satisfaction.
  • i just ripped two raw 75 cellos, one with a minor star on top. cards were off center and some dings... plus you have that piece of gum in middle which makes the back end cards warp slightly (at least mine did). I regret ripping these. Agre with suggestion to hold/sell and pick up some racks. I ripped a couple of racks recently and got some superior quality cards, star and common. much better experience if you are willing to pay the premium on 75 racks.

bottom line for me - don't rip 75 cellos for single card inventory build purposes. Good luck.

Cellos from the '70's are definitley not good candidates for opening. They were packed way too tightly to yield more than a few good cards. The mid-80's packs are a much better bet. I think for '70's packs, in terms of the quality of cards you will get: first rack, then wax is the way to go.

I'm actually contemplating opening one of my 1971 rack packs. One with commons showing has a 1" split along one of the pockets and wear through at the corners. If I rip it, I'll film it and put it up on Youtube.

    John,

Good luck if you rip that 1971 rack pack. Are the cards showing well centered? If so, you might get some nice cards to submit.

BTW, what series is it? That would also be a deciding factor for me based on the potential for a big hit like a Munson for instance.

Either way, youtubing it would be great!!!

Thanks. Centering is all over as usual. One of the top cards is well centered. It's a first series rack so there is some nice potential in there. I wouldn't consider ripping it though if it wasn't already coming apart. The Munson showing on one of my other racks is nearly miscut. I think I posted scans of the packs in Muggy's thread.

LOL, I know what you mean--I use a loupe to inspect packs looking for any minute tears to justify opening them!

Good luck with the rip! Hope you pull a mint Rose!
