Bob "Hawk" Taylor funeral - 1957-58 Braves

I attended the funeral of Bob "Hawk" Taylor here in Murray, KY, today. He passed away on the 55th anniversity of his major league debut. Hawk was a high school phenom who signed with the Braves as one of the first "bonus babies" in June of 1957 for $119,000, a record amount at the time. The rules at that time were that the bonus babies had to stay with the club for two years and couldn't be assigned to a minor league team until then. As Del Crandall was the Braves catcher at that time, Hawk say very little action for his first two years out of high school. He was a part of the Braves team that went to the 1957 and 1958 World Series, however. Hawk stayed in the big leagues until retiring in 1971. He played for the Braves, Mets, Angels, Royals, and Red Sox.
Hawk was a great man who lived the remainder of his life with his wife of 49 years, Marie, on beautiful Kentucky Lake. He was an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. Marie was an accomplished concert pianist, and Hawk came to love music, especially opera, almost as much as he loved baseball. He loved his sons, Bruce and Sam, and his two grandsons, Devin and Jacob, and it was very moving to here the family speak of their love for him.
Hawk collected baseball memorabilia, and was especially interested in memorabilia related to his favorite player, Ted Williams.
If you knew Hawk Taylor or remember him in any way, feel free to post. I will send the thread to his wife.

I remember you talking to me about Hawk Taylor. I never did get to meet him, but every time I saw a card of him, I thought of you and I thought of how neat it was that MLB veteran lived near me in western KY. Sorry to hear about his death.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
