What set (base) contains the most HOFers?

I was opening up some 1987 Topps today, and was kind of amazed by the number of Hall of Famers I got in just a few packs. Nolan Ryan, Ricky Henderson, Wade Boggs, Tony Gwynn, Carlton Fisk, Ozzie Smith, Reggie Jackson etc.

Got me thinking about what set has the most Hall of Famers in it. (definitely taking about cards of ACTIVE players at the time the set was issued) Not talking about modern sets that include old time players.

Any thoughts?

1971 Topps has to be very close for post-war sets. Plus it has HOF players that were managers at the time (Schoendienst/Williams). Off the top of my head, it includes:

Mays, Aaron, Banks, Killebrew, Clemente, Kaline, Mazeroski, F Robinson, Gibson, Cepeda, Aparicio, Yastrzemski, McCovey, Brock, Perry, Jenkins, Niekro, Morgan, Blyleven, Seaver, Carew, Ryan, Carlton, Sutton, Jackson, Bench plus Rose and the managers I mentioned. I'm sure I'm missing a few here too.

off the top of my head, here are a few that have high % HOFers

    1910 E-Unc Candy..... (6/6) 100% HOFers
    1921 W551 ..... (8/10) 80% HOFers
    1930 W554 ..... (13/18) 72% HOFers, + O'Doul
    1921 E253 ...... (14/20) 70% HOFers
    1929 W553 ...... (12/18) 67% HOFers, + O'Doul
    1931 W517 ...... (34/54) 63% HOFers, + O'Doul
    1910 E98 ........ (18/30) 60% HOFers, + Chase

The T206 set is chock full of them. But for more modern sets, I like '68/'69 as many of the classic players were nearing retirement (Mantle, Aaron, Mays) and a new crop was coming up (Carlton, Bench, Ryan).
2.5 is pretty much my speed.

As base Topps sets go, 83 is pretty loaded.

1972 football has Sixty - yes 60 HOFers. That does not include All start - pro action or leader cards. Sixty singles. The set is just AWESOME. And this is only with a 351 card set. I believe the next closest is the 1984 Topps set with 37.

i am almost done with a fully signed 1987 Topps FB set and counting team cards and league leaders i believe there are currently 49/396 HOFers with a few more that could possibly sneak in sometime in the future. i'm sure it isn't in the running for the most but it sure seemed like it over the years trying to get some of these guys.

    36 without LL/TC/RBs.

I'm thinking 1973 topps. Almost identical to the list of 1971 above which is another great set. Take away Banks from the list but add Fisk and Schmidt.

You not only take away Banks in 1973 but Mazeroski and Wilhelm too.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo.

  • It has to be the 900 card Pro Set Football from 1990-1992.
  • It has to be pro set from 1990.
  • At least 51 Hall of Famers in 1990 and probably like another 10 in the future

  • << <i>1961 is way up there. >>

1962 baseball has to be up there with Ruth tribute and at least 4 Mantle's.

    Also 4 Ford's, 3 Spahn's, 2 Musial's, 2 May's, 2 Aarons's, 2 Killebrew's, 2 Cepeda's, 2 Maz...probably missing a bunch of multiples.

You add Goose as well, so it looks to be a wash unless we are forgetting somebody. That said, '73 also has the 'All Time Leader' subset with Ruth, Cobb, etc.

  • had a similar discussion with someone and I remember 1970 was the highest I counted. Looking through again count 42 unique Hall-of-Famers. Obviously 1973 or 76 would eclipse that with the All-Time Great subsets, but if not counting those, not sure if any other set could beat that

    t206 has 37

    1965 Topps Baseball-40:

    Aaron
    Alston
    Aparicio
    Banks

    Bunning
    Carlton
    Cepeda
    Clemente
    Drysdale
    Ford
    Fox
    Gibson
    Hunter
    Kaline
    Killebrew
    Koufax
    Lopez
    Mantle
    Marichal
    Mathews
    Mays
    Mazeroski
    McCovey
    Morgan
    Niekro
    Perez
    Perry
    Roberts
    Robinson, Brooks
    Robinson, Frank
    Santo
    Schoendienst
    Spahn
    Stargell
    Stengel
    Wilhelm
    Williams, Billy
    Yastrzemski

In 1966, Billy Herman, Jim Palmer, Fergie Jenkins, and Don Sutton are added, and Yogi Berra, Steve Carlton, Casey Stengel, Al Lopez, Warren Spahn (if you don't count the checklist variation) and Nellie Fox go away. Down to 38.

In 1967, Rod Carew, Tom Seaver, Dick Williams, Leo Durocher, and Steve Carlton are added, and Billy Herman and Robin Roberts go away (Koufax is on too many leader cards to say he's missing). Up to 41.

In 1968, Nolan Ryan and Johnny Bench are added, and Sandy Koufax and Whitey Ford go away. Still 41.

In 1969, Reggie Jackson, Rollie Fingers, Earl Weaver, Joe Gordon and Ted Williams are added to the list, and Eddie Mathews goes away. Up to 45.

In 1970, Sparky Anderson is added to the list, and Don Drysdale, Mickey Mantle, Joe Gordon and Dick Williams go away. Back to 42.

In 1971, Bert Blyleven, Bob Lemon, and Dick Williams are added, nobody goes away. Back up to 45.

    Edited to fix mistakes (oops)
  • Awesome stuff

A few missing names: Leo Durocher, Joe Gordon, Bob Lemon

that would give 45 to 1969

By contrast, I'm curious on a guess for which modern Topps set has the LEAST HOFers/Prospective HOFers. I would imagine something from the late 90's or early 00's. With steroid guys presumed out, I would think some of them are 15 and under. Maddux, Glavine, Larkin, Jeter etc. are all in but the McGwire, Sosa, Clemens, ARod, Bonds types being out will limit the numbers.

1969 sounds about right to me.

Another question down the same path, is name the all-star team that has the most hof'ers. Again, it's somewhere in the late 60's when there were around 40 active future hof'ers.

Bob-good stuff. You say that Dick Williams goes away in 1970, but he's back in the 1971 set. Does that mean that the 71 set actually has 43?

<< <i>A few missing names: Leo Durocher, Joe Gordon, Bob Lemon >>

Exactly right! I forgot those guys were in the Hall. So add Leo Durocher and Joe Gordon to 1969, and add Leo Durocher, Bob Lemon, and Dick Williams to 1971. Both now have 45. I'm off to check 1972 through 1975 now. image

Wow Bob, great work. I was pretty sure it would be an early or mid 60's set. The 65 is one of my favorites and the first of the 60's I completed.

In 1972, Carlton Fisk is added, and Ernie Banks and Jim Bunning go away. Back to 44. Here's the current list:

    1972 Topps-44:

    Aaron
    Alston
    Anderson, Sparky
    Aparicio
    Bench
    Blyleven
    Brock
    Carew
    Carlton
    Cepeda
    Clemente
    Durocher
    Fingers
    Fisk
    Gibson
    Hunter
    Jackson
    Jenkins
    Kaline
    Lemon
    Killebrew
    Marichal
    Mays
    Mazeroski
    McCovey
    Morgan
    Niekro
    Palmer
    Perez
    Perry
    Robinson, Brooks
    Robinson, Frank
    Ryan
    Santo
    Schoendienst
    Seaver
    Stargell
    Sutton
    Weaver
    Wilhelm
    Williams, Billy
    Williams, Dick
    Williams, Ted
    Yastrzemski

In 1973, Mike Schmidt, Eddie Mathews, Yogi Berra, Whitey Herzog, and Rich Gossage are added, and Bill Mazeroski, Hoyt Wilhelm, Ted Williams and Bob Lemon, go away. That gets us back to 45. If you want, you can add Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Walter Johnson, and Cy Young as well for a grand total of 50, but that seems kind of iffy.

In 1974, Dave Winfield is added, and Roberto Clemente, Whitey Herzog and Leo Durocher go away. Willie Mays is still on the World Series card. Down to 43.

In 1975, George Brett, Robin Yount, Jim Rice, and Gary Carter are added. Willie Mays, Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal and Luis Aparicio go away. Still 43. Probably doesn't make sense to count the MVP cards, since that would get the total VERY high. Edited to add: Okay, I got curious. MVP card additions would be Roy Campanella, Willie Mays, Mickie Mantle, Ernie Banks, Nellie Fox, Sandy Koufax, Roberto Clemente, and Orlando Cepeda for a whopping total of 51.
  • bobsbbcardsbobsbbcards Posts: 3,254 ✭✭✭
In 1976, add Dennis Eckersley and Whitey Herzog, and subtract Bob Gibson, Al Kaline, Harmon Killebrew, Eddie Mathews, Yogi Berra and Ron Santo. Down to 39.

    1976 Topps-39:

    Aaron
    Alston
    Anderson, Sparky
    Bench
    Blyleven
    Brett
    Brock
    Carew
    Carlton
    Carter
    Eckersley
    Fingers
    Fisk
    Gossage
    Herzog
    Hunter
    Jackson
    Jenkins
    McCovey
    Morgan
    Niekro
    Palmer
    Perez
    Perry
    Rice
    Robinson, Brooks
    Robinson, Frank
    Ryan
    Schmidt
    Schoendienst
    Seaver
    Stargell
    Sutton
    Weaver
    Williams, Billy
    Williams, Dick
    Winfield
    Yastrzemski
    Yount

Could also add Lou Gehrig, Rogers Hornsby, Pie Traynor, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Ted Williams, Mickie Cochrane, Walter Johnson, and Lefty Grove for a total of 48.
