They do the same thing at the Masters.

Great rule, and you will have to go through
a metal detector to make sure it's enforced.

Now, I wish the same were true at movie
    theaters and restaurants!!

I was at a movie theater back a couple of
years ago, when someone's cell phone rang
behind me. They answered the damn thing,
    and talked.

Cell phones have made people rude, or more
likely rude people now have cell phones.

I'm not surprised about the cell phone rule... while the majority of the people can follow the instructions to silence their cell phones, there are plenty of people who have no clue how to silence the "click" sound while taking a picture with them. Even the people with digital cameras, some of them don't know how to shut off the beeping sound.

I think they hurt themselves by making everyone be quiet, because that just makes the slightest sound that much more noticeable. If everyone could make as much noise as they want, it would be like white noise and the golfer wouldn't even notice.

Oh well, rules are rules... if they can't follow them, watch it at home. image

IMO, it not so much that people don't know how, it's that a lot of them just don't care. Self-important Dbags are the fastest growing segment of our population.

Excuse me now - I have to shoo some kids off my lawn.

I am excited. I have never been to a major. Been to PGA, LPGA and senior PGA but never a major. Going Saturday so will not see the Tiger, Phil and Bubba group. Will be rooting for the Sacramento area golfers (Levin and Watney) plus Zach Johnson since he used to play at my buddy's CC in Cedar Rapids. BTW, great display at the little country club there in Cedar Rapids of Zach memorabilia. Those small/impromptu "museums" are sort of cool I think and show the love that people have especially in smaller towns. I used to belong at the same club as Scott McCarron (did not play a round with him) did but there was no mention of his PGA status (and he was top 20 then).

I have been to three different Open's and the USGA is far more interested in the golf than the fan experience. You won't get that close to the players and my best advice at an Open is to find a grandstand far away from the clubhouse and camp there all day. You'll see everyone once. If you try to follow a group, especially Tiger, you'll be pulling your hair out.

I think they had some problems with cell phone photogs at The Memorial Tourney (Jack's event in Dublin, Ohio). I heard they were confiscating phones there this year (I wasn't there, but heard from those that were). No problem with the ban from me (it's their event, their rules), though I think it makes the golfers appear rather fragile.

All of the PGA events have the cell phone rule.

    Have a great time John.

It's kind of sad not being able to document an event.

Based on how thoughtless people are in my office (sign - please turn off cells) and how distracting their cell phone can be to me - I can sure understand how they don't want to take a chance with a cell phone going off right in the middle of a "winning putt?"

Sheesh, if I can't take my Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum to a golf tournament even with my concealed weapons permit? WTF? I need some protection against the golf goons.

I actually wish other places would enforce rule #1. Restaurants, movie theaters....just about anywhere you are trying to relax and someone has a loud obnoxious ringtone go off. Its like these idiots I see driving down the road barely missing other cars talking on the phone because they wouldnt survive without knowing their little pet, child, spouse, etc was taking a dump and had to call someone to find out about it

Having to reduce common sense to writing really documents how pathetic people have become

Cell phones? WTHeck- leave them in the car- better yet leave them at home

    edited to add-

To the extent that people need to see rules such as these in writing is the most compelling argument that more people who are just not capable of understanding or appreciating the tradition associated with golf would enjoy the event more if they stayed home and watched it on television

Even faster growing than the "bailout/handout seeking" segment??? I doubt it.

I disagree. Common sense is that you don't click pictures during the fragile golfers back swing, don't talk loudly on the phone, etc.... However, in most every other place in the world we can have a phone/email device. Some of us like to be connected to the world. That doesn't mean we are rude, loud or inappropriate. Obviously most of us can survive a day without our email however it seems a bit over broad to exclude all means of communication. How about signs that say "if you click your camera or talk loudly on your phone you will be removed from the premises." That would solve the problem, no!?

It hasn't solved it so far. In fact, those current restrictions have been about as effective as the PSA they run before EVERY movie asking people to turn their phones off. Far too many people in this country read those signs with a magical "except you of course; you're too cool for these rules" appended to whatever they say.

Yes, but I added (what the movie theater does not) that you will be removed for breaking the rule. Once they remove a few people most people would fall into line I think.

at the 2010 at Pebble Beach, there were kisosks set up around the links if you NEEDED to make a call. i saw more than a dozen with cell phones trying to be discreet taking photos. the marshall's have too much to do than be cellphone nazi's but there's still the abundance of uniformed LE.

let me know if Tiger does anything more than stare straight ahead off into space when going from green to tee. i hope he does well. i don't have a fav to win, though.

Attending the US Open is truly a privilege as well as an opportunity to disconnect for the day to enjoy a great tradition- and if that does not work, there is television and your cell phone for those that need it or have forgotten what life was like before the new age of instant gradification

  • Only a jackhole takes his cell phone to the golf course. Thats the reason for golfing, a 18 hole escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

You can have a cell phone at the practice rounds for the Masters. At least you could this year.
  • larryallen73larryallen73 Posts: 6,061 ✭✭✭
    Three things:
    1) I think it's interesting people here decide who are DB's, who can't remember what life use to be like, who needs instant gratification, what one should do or not do at a golf course. That makes no sense. If someone else wants a phone why should that affect you so long as the person with the phone behaves. Why should you judge them? I would call all of you judgmental DBs but then I guess I am doing the same thing back so I won't say that. I personally like having my phone. Maybe I am a self important a'h, I am a DB and whatever else I may be and that's fine. It should be my right to be whatever I want to be as long as I am not unreasonable with my cell phone use.

    2) Point of Interest: Phones are allowed if you get a special sticker. So our group of 15 or 20 had 3 stickers. This was sold to my friend as part of the package he bought. I was not one of the lucky 3. Yes, I survived the day without my phone.

    3) Oh ya, Saturday was one of the two nicest days I have ever had in SF and I have been there hundreds of times over the last 25 years.

Common sense isn't as "common" as you might think.
  • jdip9jdip9 Posts: 1,894 ✭✭✭
The cell phones weren't the problem this weekend - it was the drunk a-holes that thought they were part of the show by yelling inane things right after a golfer swings.

If you're going to be a jackass, at least be creative - like the guy who yelled "Nice layup" to Colsearts after he hit an iron on the 260 yd 7th hole on Saturday. Nobody wants to hear "Yabba Dabba Do" "Get in the Hole" (on a 450-yd par 4), or any of the other dumb things I heard this weekend.

    Lets set the record straight-

I do not set or impose rules as to what one should or should not do on a golf course- nor did I refer to anyone as a DB or pass judgment other than to write:

Having to reduce common sense to writing really documents how pathetic people have become

Cell phones? WTHeck- leave them in the car- better yet leave them at home

I do not see that as passing judgment-just pointing out what the options are for folks which includes keeping their cell phone and watching the US Open on television. This is not judging.
    *************************************************
    Onward with my point-

You may not like the rules imposed at the US Open, but it is a PGA Event which in this instance was on private property and I suspect there was a general concurrence with respect to cell phone use.

To each his own. The rule of there being no cell phones has to be in writing. Otherwise 99% of the people would show up at the gate with a cell phone and that would be chaos. So that has to be in writing and has nothing to do with anything except the fact that we expect to be able to take our phone anywhere we go. The fact that people are rude with their phones and maybe need written rules for that is a different issue. I have been golfing for 35 years+ so I respect the game and all that but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be allowed to check my email if I want to.

Beyond that you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that but I greatly disagree. You have the right to connect without your phone and whatever else but that's what YOU want. Not me. The majority may agree with you but I don't think anybody should tell me where I can take my phone. They can tell me how to act with the phone and they can confiscate it if I disobey (as I have seen happen in Court) but I think it's nonsense to say a person can not take their phone in. That has nothing to do with the tradition of golf. The tradition everywhere is to have no cell phones as it's only been 25 years that people have been actively carrying phones with them.

There are no mulligans during PGA events. Some ahole takes a picture, golfer gets distracted, shoots into the water, and then loses the US Open by two strokes.

Problem not solved. Hypothetical guy went from winning $1.44MM to 'only' making $275K.

Otherwise, good to hear you had a great time.
