Paypal forcing SS numbers

My ebay fees are due in a few days. They are automatically taken from my paypal account. So today I went on paypal to add funds from my bank account. When I clicked on add money, I got a request for my social security number. Now it wont let me transfer funds into my paypal account from my bank UNLESS I give them my SS number. The only other option is if I use something called a money pak. Does anyone else use moneypak? Is it safe? thanks

You sure you were on the actual Paypal site?

I'm surprised it wasn't always that way. I never thought about it until your post, but it makes sense. Credit cards and bank accounts need it. PayPal fits that category. I hate giving info for anything. I have all the trackers blocked and that kind of thing. But if PayPal wants my social, I'm okay with it.

Edit to add. I'm assuming it's the real PayPal.

I got paid a debt that was owed to me by a money pak. I'd never even heard of it before but it went through fine. I was required to enter my SS number along with a confirmation code that the debtor sent me. I'm not sure whey people are so scared to enter their SS numbers on a legit site. It's just like any other credit check, bank transaction, etc.....paypal IS a financial intermediary and they should require SS info.

You do not have to add funds to your Paypal account to pay your ebay fees. Whatever the balance is after exhausting your Paypal account will automatically be deducted from your bank account.

This.. Not real sure what reason there is to keep money sitting in a non-interest bearing PayPal account when they will so graciously auto-deduct it directly from your bank as needed.

exactly. I always keep a few hundred in there just in case but I always ship larger amounts to my bank account and any large purchases come directly from checking or usually a credit card for more buyer protection. I use my paypal debit card sometimes to ship stuff. Gives 1% cash back when you use it, lol.

Are you sure about this? I have had paypal for many years and not once have they deducted from my bank account. (unless I did it myself).

Yeah, pretty sure if you have you bank account linked. Over 5000 buying transactions for me and less than 50 of them were paid for with a PayPal balance.

I can verify that Paypal will auto-deduct when the PP balance is short.

Yes.... I have mine set up to a seperate debit card that is for a seperate checking acct. than I use for my daily life. I NEVER keep a balance in my paypal acct. It pulls the money from my 2nd checking acct, through the debit card that is attatched. With all the stories I hear about people hijacking Paypal accts, I wanted to be sure if that happened to me, that I knew exactly how much they could take. I use that seperate checking acct for Paypal only....and I only put money in that account when I have to pay for Ebay transactions. Other than keeping 2 checkbooks, it seems to be working well for me. Have done it this way since I opened my Paypal acct.

I use paypal for a few different monthly bills that get paid whether I have a balance or not.

I had a balance of about $4.50 in there this morning when my Netflix bill went through. They took the $4.50 from paypal and deducted the rest from my checking account automatically this morning.

Been like that for years for me. Takes a couple days before it'll actually be gone from my bank account but the bills or purchases are paid immediately.

Never bounced a payment though. Wonder if they'd stop trusting you if that ever happened.

You can also link everything to a credit card. I never carry a Paypal balance. My Netflix monthly payment is made automatically by Paypal through my credit card.

And I want to add --

I had my paypal linked to my savings acct. which charges you after a certain amount of transactions, but you can move to a checking acct and is OK. DO CHECK WITH YOUR BANK.
