Tim Duncan of the Midwest Division champion San Antonio Spurs has been named winner of the 2001-02 IBM Award, determined by a computerized rating that measures a player's overall contribution to a team.
Duncan outscored the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year, Ben Wallace, 112.92 to 103.75 to win his first-ever IBM Award. The Minnesota Timberwolves' Kevin Garnett finished third with 101.51 points. The Clippers' Elton Brand (94.67), Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal (90.89), Nets' Jason Kidd (90.10), Celtics' Paul Pierce (89.32), Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki (88.85), Magic's Tracy McGrady (87.29) and Sonics' Gary Payton (83.35) rounded out the top ten.
Duncan, who became the 14th player in NBA history to score 2,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in a single season, led the Spurs to their second straight Midwest Division title, the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference and a tie for the second-best record in the NBA this season at 58-24. The Spurs four-time All-Star finished the regular season ranked in the top ten in five major statistical categories and led the NBA in field goals made and free throws made. He finished fifth in scoring (25.5
ppg), second in rebounding (12.7 rpg), third in blocks (2.48 bpg), ninth in field goal percentage (.508) and sixth in minutes played (40.6 mpg).
During the 2001-02 season, Duncan notched a league-high 67 double-doubles and became only the fifth player since 1972-73 to rank in the top five in scoring, rebounding and blocks - joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O'Neal. Duncan also registered two 20-20 games this season with 29 points and 21 rebounds on January 29 vs. Charlotte and 24 points and 21 rebounds on February 12 at Sacramento. Duncan's top statistical performance of his career came on
December 26 vs. Dallas when he recorded a career-high 53 points (19-28 FGA, 15-15 FTA) with 11 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. During the 2001-02 season, Duncan was named the Western Conference Player of the Month for December, March and April and captured the Western Conference Player of the Week six times.
The IBM Award, created to honor the player who contributes most to his team's overall success, utilizes a computer evaluation of key offensive and defensive statistics to determine an overall leader.
