My OTHER Collection

I've always admired tattoo artistry, but for a long time I was reluctant to get ink of my own for the obvious reasons. I'm a firefighter, so work wasn't a problem, but the forever factor was a big issue for me. If I was going to get tattooed it had to be something that would always be part of my life. Something that would still be "me" in 50 years.
In 2004 I finally said "screw it" and made up my mind to get my first tattoo at the age of 30. I went with two photos that my artist meshed into one "piece" as it's called.
Ruth, and the bottom half of the backround were taken from a pulitzer prize winning photo known as "The Babe Bows Out" by Nat Fein.
The top half of the backround is a picture of Yankee Stadium circa 1920's. It's on the inside part of my left forearm, and extends from my wrist to my elbow. It took 4+ hours.
About a year later I was itchin' to get more ink (this often happnens with tattoo collectors), So I added the words "The House That Ruth Built", as well as a "tribal" style band of the facade, or frieze which wraps around my forearm. After that I decided to make a "sleeve" out of it. I've since added portraits of Lou Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio, Mickey Mantle, Thurman Munson, Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter, and the interlocking NY. I have 25 or so hours of ink under my belt, and will need 12-15 more hours for it to be complete. Like collecting cards, tattoos aren't cheap so it's been a slow process. I hope to be done with it in 2 years.
I'm sure the troll patrol, and the alt army will be out in full force on this one, but I wanted to share it anyway.

At an autograph show, I was getting something signed by Whitey Ford, and he noticed it, and asked for a close up look. I extended my arm, and he grabbed my wrist and looked it over for a few seconds. He looked up and said. "I don't like tattoos, but that's a good one. I like it"
Tattoos are dumb.
Nobody cares what 90 year old yankee thinks.
+1 to myself.
And +1 for giving yourself a +1
BTW ... are you FDNY? My father-in-law is a retired Chief from the Marshal's office.

Years ago, I had devil with a hockey stick inked on my left arm. I've always planned on surrounding it with the Devils logo especially since the two pieces I've since added to my right arm caused the arms to be "unbalanced." Well, a few weeks ago, I saw the girl who did the work on my right arm and we added a new piece to surround the devil (and clarify the intent) and it seems to work nicely. In a few weeks I'll go back for the touch-ups and also get the devil refreshed and have the white put back in (most of it was rejected previously). Here's an image of the logo a few hours after the work was done:

That looks GREAT, Mattingly. Your artist really got the angle of Ruth's back right, which may sound trivial, however I think that is what really MAKES that picture.
Marvelous art. If I didn't work in banking I'd be right with you, my friend.
Vin ... let's see what the players look like.

Eventually, although I doubt it will be this year, I'll surround the logo with some small Stanley Cups ('95, '00, '03). Putting the Yankees WS Championships would take almost as long as the artwork!!!
