...and with the 612th pick of the 2012 MLB Draft, the Baltimore Orioles select...

Ryan Ripken!!

I knew he was eligible for this year's draft, and it's great to see the O's draft him! This kid is 6'-6" 205 lbs and plays first base. Can't wait to see how he turns out as his baseball career matures. Nice!! image

He'll probably still take his full-ride scholarship to South Carolina and play for the 2010 & 2011 National Champs. Still, the idea of him becoming an Oriole someday is fantastic!
  • Very cool that the O's drafted him.

I hope it works out for him better than it did for the Mattingly Boys lol.

Man ... he looks SO MUCH like his dad in that picture! My daughter is the same age and will be going to Loyola University in Baltimore in August ... I'll have to tell her to keep an eye out for him! LMAO!

of course being left handed, there will be no shortstop or third base for him.......

Good PR move by the O's . It would be neat if he signed and he was even half as good ( or better ) than his dad . Time will tell on both .--- Sonny

IMF ... was there a chance the Os were planning to use him as a pitcher?

Cal was on the radio the other day before his kid was drafted, said most teams were looking at him as a pitcher but he was determined to be an every day player. He said his son was looking like a middle round pick and would probably end up going to school if that was the case.

that's true, the Orioles were the only team that considered him as a posible position player (every other interested club wanted him to pitch only; the Rangers showed the most interest in him)....Not only did Cal want to play every day (obviously), but he and his dad decided it would be easier to go from position player to pitcher vs. pitcher to position player if one didn't work out....Also, the Orioles had the advantage of watching Jr. take BP @ Memorial Stadium as a teenager & saw him launch balls over the left field wall regularly....
