Thought I had a bit of a grasp on 55 Topps

And then I see this...

1955 Topps #77 PSA 8

Admittedly I'm a PSA 7 guy, but this seems way out of whack for a low # common in PSA 8, even if it is a somewhat tough card. The weirdest part is that this is a pretty ugly 8, IMO, as far as L/R centering.

I let my VCP subscription lapse a few months ago, so I can't check it, but is this thing way over avg? MCMLVTopps, are you out there? You know more about this set in PSA 8 than I ever will.

It must cost extra because his name is so long..... barely fits on the flip!

There were four bidders from $221.99 and up.

To me that means this has good support in that price range.

No clue what it normally sells.

Ive seen tougher psa 8s reach hundreds, even up to a couple grand, many times. Someone is probably thrilled to put that flip in their collection! (A bit of sarcasm there because so many buy the flip and not the card)

I was about to post that exact thing. This is extreme "buy the holder" mentality. That card out of the holder gets $20 max, and probably not that. If PSA and the Registry was gone tomorrow (will happen someday) that card loses 90%+ of its value. Is a 1955 Topps Aaron PSA 6 really worth less than this card? The Registry makes people do strange things for a number.

    Chad,

The Portocarrero was always a "tough card" in terms of it not often coming up. The particular card you reference is one I would not have bid on with all the dots in the name line. It did, however, sell for a bargain price. Never could get a Porto....PSA 8 in my big set.

I put my "big" 55 Topps set together in the 05-06 time frame. Prices were outrageous as many of the now top tier collectors were also putting their sets together. I once saw a Jack Parks PSA 8 go for over $5k !!!
It was crazy times then and I have no idea why that particular time made the cards so expensive. Times have changed and many PSA 8s have dropped substantially, some by 1 or 2k, many by hundreds of dollars.

I sold my big set this past November...but the smartest thing I did was to send my entire set into Newport Beach seeking the half-point upgrade. If memory serves, I managed to snag 17 bumps, one of which was a PSA 8 that came back a PSA 9!! Never thought I'd see that day!! A few of the upgrades were heavy duty...Berra 8.5 among them, and at the time a Gus Triandos 8.5 that was a 1 of 1, none higher. Not even Don Spence had a higher card in Triandos. image What is really crazy about the Triandos is that I cracked it out of an SGC84 holder a couple of years ago and it worked its way up very nicely. The bumps really added substantially to my bottom line sales and I did very well.

I am now one card short of completing my 5th (and LAST) 55 Topps set, this one is all PSA 7. Hope your collecting efforts are working out well on your set.

    Regards,
    Al
