modern MS and 20'th mixed?

Are these the two most popular type sets? I was intrested in TypeTone's post about the modern sets. Looks like there will be a hot contest in the modern circulating strikes set.

In an earlier post lots of us said we would go for the mixed 20'th Century set with varieties.

Now of course I'm generalizing, I will do the 20'th mixed and 20'th proof, while I'm certain Keith D. will do the circulating 20'th set.

Are there too many choices?

I like the 20th mixed best because I think many of us collect pre 1950 cs and post 1950 proofs. I am there already and am planning to move up the list as I add the tougher pieces.

The 20th cs only is also appealing because many of the cs guys just can't stand the idea of buying a pack of 69DCs. So, the competition should be good. I might decide to play there as well. I already have many of the harder post 50 cs pieces. The ones I don't have are not too expensive in acceptable grades. The top rankings are going to be based on the quality of the high-weight pre 1950 pieces which I am collecting for the mixed set anyway.

The 20th proof might be interesting. Probably won't play, because if I buy three cs Barbers, I probably won't have money for nice proof barbers as well. Plus the early Lincolns and Buffalos plus the Peace and Morgan will cost a fortune.

Modern proof I am obviously a player.

Won't play in modern mint state. To get a top ranking one would need to buy highest grade type pieces. For now I can't stomach the idea of paying $750 to $1000 for an MS68 SBA or several hundred for a late date Lincoln in 69RD. Might change my mind later as I certainly have shelled out several thousand for many of my highest in grade IKEs.

I think combined modern is superflous as I indicated in my other post. So, whether I post there or not I view as irrelevent.

Later, I will do the basic design gold set. Will probably start this after I get 100% on the 20th century entries.

Did I give away too much?

    Cheers

  • Too many choices -- probably.

Modern Sets 1950 to present -- always been strong competition on both the MS & PR sides, more so on the MS side because the PR-70's are really hard to find and a lot of high grade 2001 dated MS coins have been available in bulk. Don't think that there will be a lot of competition in the Combined set because the PR guys will be able to dominate and make the point of the set moot. The only additional MS coin is really the SMS piece, or if you are an MS collector, the silver state quarter and the Accented Hair Kennedy.

20th Century Sets -- Will be interesting to see whether the idea of a With Varieties set and Major Types set work out. My gut feeling is that most collectors will gravitate towards the With Varieties, because many feel that these are legitimate types, but have already purchased them in the past. The Combined set will be popular, because even the proof guys want an SLQ. Many have expressed a strong interest in the MS set, and it will be interesting to see if the PR set takes off as well.

Gold Sets -- About 10 sets of each class right now. Hoping that more will show interest in these sets and that PCGS will re-incorporate them with the 20th Century sets down the road.
