Mike Marshall's pitching - What do you think?

Mike Marshall was one of the great relief pitchers of all-time. He was known for his nasty screwball and his ability to seemingly pitch every day. He was also thought to be a screwball by many, and was traded often. I've watched some of his pitching videos and I can't make up my mind whether he is out of his mind or is a genius. I played in the infield in high school, and only pitched once (in a blowout), so I just don't know enough about pitching mechanics and injuries to determine the validity of his theories. What do you think?

  • Throwing a baseball is an unnatural motion for any human especially with an over the top motion. Anything over a 2 (or 10 for lefties) o'clock motion, especially if the elbow is above the shoulder at any point, makes for a high injury risk. Sandy Koufax is a good example of an almost completely over the top release that resulted in a shortened career due to chronic pain and injury.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

  • << <i>A question is would that type of motion even be considered legal in a MLB game? I can see the guy getting a balk call. >>

I don't see any reason why it would be a balk. Also, the only time a pitcher would pitch from the windup like that would be if the bases are empty (a balk is not possible), or if the bases were loaded.

Marshall had much success doing things his way, and who to say pitching has to be by the book by everyone......success as a pitcher is something that often defies logic.....used to love watching Ted Abernathy and Dan Quisenberry pitch with their weird underhand deliveries.
