Question about Parkhurst Hockey - Help Please

I have a buddy of mine (in Canada) that is starting to get back into collecting. I have been trying to bring him up to speed concerning grading, pop reports and how the card industry has changed over the last 15 years.

He put an ad in his local paper stating he was looking to buy sportscards. He got a call from a guy about a mile from his house saying he had some older Parkhurst hockey cards. My buddy went over to his house to look at the cards. He had the following raw cards:

52/53 set minus 13 cards (sounds like it was the big names) in about PSA 4 condition on average.
53/54 complete set in PSA 6 condition on average.
54/55 set minus 11 cards (all commons) in about PSA 6 condition.

I don't know much about hockey and I am trying to help my friend decide if he should buy or not. The gentlemen selling the cards wants $5K for the lot.

I would appreciate it if the hockey guys could chime in and let me know if you think this price is in the ballpark or way out of line.

Thanks for all your help.

at first glance and w/o doing any "research" it looks to me as though your buddy will be paying close to retail. hopefully others with more expertise can chime in.

I would buy them at that price. The 53/54 set is a great set and has the Jean Beliveau rookie in it. The 52 will have the Dickie Moore and Tim Horton Rookies. They also have early Howe, Sawchuk and Richard cards.

If they present well then it is a good buy.

I haven't heard of it. I too am from Ontario but close to Toronto.

If you friend is looking to collect then I think the price is OK. If he is looking to flip for a profit then I would offer around $4000.

    Matthew,

I told him the same thing. I think he is going back to look at the cards again today or tomorrow. Thanks for your feedback. What town are you from?
