Long Beach Coin & Sports Memorabilia Show - Did I get a good deal on these racks?

Took my son and my dad (who's a coin collector) to the Long Beach Coin & Sports Memorabilia today. Didn't really have any expectations, as this year was the first year back for sports memorabilia, but we had a good time looking around. I did pick up some unopened material.

I picked up a box of '86 Topps baseball and 11 rack packs (9 of '84 Topps and 1 of '83 Topps and 1 of '82 Topps) for a grand total of $35.

Did I get a good deal?

Yes you did, I see a couple HOF's on those racks, nice!
  • I love baseball cards from 1986. It was the first year I started collecting. I didnt even know who was who but that I really liked how the A's cards (Uniforms looked back then). For $35 Id say you made out nicely. Are you going to open the 86 box? In my closet, I have an 87,88 and 89 all unopened. I have no desire to open them either since Ive opened a ton in the past. More for nostalgic purposes today.

I also attended a card show yesterday. I have to say that it was pretty dead. Friday nights are tough but they also have them on Saturdays and they're usually better turnouts however I worked a bit earlier today so that's why I went yesterday. Picked up a few goodies my self. This Clemente from 1972 is a card that I have wanted since I remember seeing the Turn Back the Clock card in the Topps 1987 set. Looks like a solid 8 in person. That one will get graded eventually. The graded cards are the ones that I sent out (piggybacked with a dealer) and he brought them back. Was very happy with the Aaron. Also picked up some Canseco Auto cards for cheap just to add to my never ending collection of his cards and also picked up a wax box of 87 Topps just to keep me entertained last night. Pulled out 1 Bonds and a Bo Jackson and a McGwire and also the other key cards I assume. For $6 bucks, I couldn't pass. Also stocked up on top loaders and penny sleeves.

Great to hear you took your soon to the show. I wish I saw more kids at mine. Are you going to open them up? If so, let us know what you guys pulled. Good luck on getting a Mattingly.

So I OPENED everything. I have never been able to keep stuff sealed up. All the racks were very crisp and centered. I did not get any of the rookies, no Ripken, Boggs, Gwynn, Sandberg, or Mattingly. I did get some star power that I think has a good chance at PSA.

As for the '86 box, I did not see one Ryan, Ripken, or Puckett! I did get a Clemens, but it was OC and had a good size nick on the upper left. There were a few Reggie's in there, but were all OC.

Here are the cards that I felt would be gradable in the 9-10 range. I again apologize for the photo.

There were a lot of very well centered '84s, but I don't know if any are worth subbing as I don't have the pop report.

Access to the pop report is free now to all.
  • Well, going by BBCE prices, you got $60 worth of stuff*- and that's not counting shipping. So I'd say yes- you got a good deal.

*This is assuming a price of $10 for a '83 Topps regular rack pack without a star showing. BBCE didn't have any, so this is a guess.

That's what I get for not checking 1st..
  • Great pickup for that price!!

I still like the 84's, even though they are not worth a lot. I have opened so many.

    Thanks for sharing. image

That show is right in my backyard. I almost went, but didn't look like it had a lot yet for Baseball. Perhaps next time I'll check it out. Cool racks, nonetheless!

Did you also go to the Angel game yesterday? Thought you said you were going; that was a pretty wild game.

How was the show? A friend of mine that used to be an active member here (King Kellogg) was staying with us and set up selling currency. He wasn't even aware there were card sellers, but didn't leave his table at all.
Was there a decent section of card sellers? Was it as big as the recent Glendale show?

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

There were not a lot of tables set up for cards even though PSA was there for submissions, I believe that Memory Lane was there as well and they had a really nice Babe Ruth display in the center of the show. Nonetheless, the show was mostly coins and a little bit of stamps. There was no where near as many sellers as the Glendale show. I did not see one seller that was selling modern stuff. (I wanted to get a couple Angel cards of Trout and Trumbo for my son). One of the sellers was from Frank and Sons, she had some nice 50's and 60's.

I did go to the Angel game, had a great time in some crappy seats. Set the record for most people wearing Cowboy hats at once! Trout is doing great, the play at the plate was intense!
