Topps Vault Color Key Proof Sets

Anybody an expert on "color key proof cards" from Topps Vault

some can be found in Ebays completed listings

Are these 1 of 1's ? Or no real way to know how many sets they had ?

Pretty sure they are all 1/1, although any card could have four different colors for the same card
  • the SETS have all 4 colors (plastic layers) laid on top of each other to produce the whole card
I guess they are calling it a set, because they have all 4 colors, yet one card

I was just wondering if they could have made more than one set

Strange things happen during printing, there could always be more then one set, it would be unusual though, as it would be extra work with no reason.

Usually, the Topps color proofs sold on ebay are the type used to make sure the colors don't bleed and the like, not things stacked upon on each other to make a card. The colors of course were printed separate.

I imagine in some cases, there are up to 8 of them, but usually there should be 6. Each color by itself, and then two with two of the colors paired. I have never seen a Vault auction with 6, although I have seen the colors by themselves, and they are paired about 1/3-1/2 the time in their listings.

Found the listing above on ebay, which has five, usually there is a magenta-yellow combo also.

Edit to add: Each of the color proofs, also had a photo negative. So, at the low end, figure 12 proofs possible for every Topps card (until recently), and the photo proof (actual photo) they used for the card.

Here are the seven 1981 Drakes Jim Rice that I have - since I have seven I am assuming that there must be at least an eighth.

PSA doesn't grade proofs or other oddities not meant for general release, like blank backs. Beckett will, SGC it is likely case by case.

I personally have no problem with them being graded, but don't see the purpose. I also don't see the purpose in getting your 1/1's graded (in most cases).

I imagine wherever you heard there are 4 proofs to the Hostess set, came to that conclusion cause we typically use a four-color press in the US, and in sport cards, but as shown and noted above, there were likely duo color proofs also.

I really like the Topps photo proofs and color proofs. They are great additions to PCs. I even like the blank back made for ebay topps 1/1's....but of course they don't go for much. I wouldn't like them over $20.

    Hiya David.

With Topps I'm thinking it falls way, way more in the "whatever." image
