Goldberg's pre-LB sale

The Northwest collection of middle and late date large cents sold well, in my opinion. In many cases, coins pedigreed to recent sales (Naftzger, Holmes in 2008 and 2009) sold for premiums to their previous auction appearances.

The 1839/6 N-1 in PCGS AU58 brought an astounding $80,500 vs $52,900 on 2/1/09.

Yep---got my a$$ handed to me on lot #60, the 1839 N-11 Booby Head Large Cent. It sold for $24,150.00 as a PCGS 67BN. I did win lot #58, the 1839 N-8 Large Cent in PCGS 65RB for what I thought was a reasonable price. TomT.

I bought two lots (71 and 72) the 1846 medium date PCGS MS64+ BN and the 1846 tall date PCGS MS64RB.

It was weird the slab grades were announced only a few days before the sale.

When I went to lot viewing I was surprised all of those large cents were in new PCGS slabs. After being cataloged as raw coins I wonder how many people didn't even realize they were later slabbed? A sentence w/ the new PCGS grade was added to the end of the description of each lot in the online catalog, but they never changed the grades listed in the titles of each lot... sometimes the grades were very different and there were lots of plus grades!!! Lot 60, which was previously mentioned as grading PCGS MS67BN was advertised in the catalog as an MS64+. Most coins sold for strong money anyways, so I'm not sure it mattered much, but I would imagine a few more bidders may have expressed interest and put in bids if they knew the coins were already graded.

I ended up with one of them, the last one, the 1857 Large Date graded PCGS MS65BN and I'm pretty happy with the coin and with the price image

Edited to add that another weird thing that happened at this Goldberg sale is that the date printed in the catalog for the U.S. gold lots was incorrect. At the top of the page it said Session Six was Tuesday, May 28 at approx. 6pm. From talking with others, I know that at least a couple of other bidders including myself saw that and figured they were being sold Tuesday evening, not realizing that they meant to say Monday!!! Went back to look at the prices realized on a few that I was interested and they went way too low... ouch! You would think they would have told people about this mistake during lot viewing? Oh well!

I bought a few coins online on Sunday and in person on Monday. There was certainly a lot of nice material.

The Northwest Collection did great with multiple bids on everything, while the Hesselgesser dollars were much softer than when they sold a few months back.

It was good to get out and see several of my former colleagues at the auction.

Goldbergs always do a great job.

I only bid on the Hawaiian coins at this sale, and I bought two pieces. The first was an 1881 Nickel in 66, which I considered to be the better of the two pieces offered. The second was the 1883 Half Dollar in copper, the finest known of an original mintage of 18, in 67+RB. The Half Dollar is one of the most spectacular coins of any kind that I have ever owned.

Congrats! I spent probably 30-45 minutes just looking at all of those great Hawaiian coins, even though I had no intent in bidding on them. Just had to take the opportunity to appreciate that amazing collection. Some of them were just out of this world, particularly those copper pieces. I also thought that Hawaiian $20 gold piece was extremely cool as well.

Andy, congratulations on winning the Pattern Hawaiian Half. I remember seeing the copper Pattern Quarter and Half at the Goldberg's offices in Sept. 2009 when I was there for the Naftzger Late Date Large Cents lot viewing. The Pattern Quarter and Half are provenanced, as you know, to S.F. Mint Superintendent John Daggett, father of Hallie! Those patterns are incredible, just breathtaking in terms of eye appeal and technically superb.

As far as the Northwest Collection of Large Cents, I had the chance to look at all 92 lots in flips pre slabbing at the EAC Convention in Buffalo, NY, earlier this month. There were many wonderful coins and it was my understanding that plans were initially to keep these coins raw and sell them raw at auction, but a few days before the auction they made a trip to PCGS. I thought I would have a great shot at some of these coins, but after slabbing knew I was in trouble with the Booby Head Large Cent when it went 67BN. Funny thing, I was able to buy two different variety 1839 Booby Heads out of the Naftzger sale in Feb, 2009, the N-13 and N-14, each in PCGS 66RB, for considerably less than what the N-11 went for two days ago.

After driving over 150 miles round trip and spending the better part of Saturday going through the gold coins, I thought that I would check the opening bids for the coins that were scheduled for "Tuesday" in my catalogue last night, AFTER they were already long gone! I did not see any correction notice on the website or at lot viewing. Money went unspent......
