GTG 1904 $20 (Grade Added)

**********MS-65**********

A very knowledgeable individual recently gave me incredible advice on coin photography

So the reason for posting this is split 50/50 with wondering what you think of the coin and what you think of the photos.

My guess is 63. It has a few more hits than the MS64 1904 I used to own. That said, you never know. The line of hits in the hair and the ones by the date hold it back the most. The reverse is better, but the obverse holds it back.

    I'd go with a 64, nice piece.

Great pics. Looks like an 63 or possibily a 64 if the graders were in a good mood.

Nice images. Are you using more diffused lighting? The coin looks like a nice MS63 to me.

Yes, I have moved to directional diffused lighting using two bulbs further away from the coin.

What is interesting to me is that not one person has guessed the grade correctly.

I guess it goes to show that large clear images are not what you should use for gold coins.

I will post the grade when it is guessed or by tomorrow in the AM whatever is sooner.

    64. And if it's not....it's about as close as you could get without it being a 64. These things always have extensive chatter in grades of 63 and lower. This one is not so extensive.

I know that most on this forum are real tough on grades. IMO, this one has far to many (and deep) hits on the cheek and hairline to grade MS65.

I think PCGS was agressive on this grade.

Great look to the coin though, and very nice photography.

Agreed. Nice coin, but I wouldn't buy at a gem price.

Surfaces on this coin are much cleaner than on a $20 Saint I recently saw in a 64+ holder; given that, MS65 on this coin is not a shocker.

The 1904 $20 Lib is to that series what the 1881-s Morgan is to the Morgan series. It is common in all grades and I am willing to suggest that of the type III Libs that grade 65 or higher 20-25% are dated 1904.

While this is a decent coin, I do not see it as a 65 for the series or the date.

Collectors talk about grade inflation and I usually do not see things that way- The exception is with $20 Gold.

Part of the problem is that these coins have traditional been graded harshly- and now seeing this in a 65 holder seems to document the argument.

Sorry if this offensive- just writing the way I see it

The number of 1904 MS65 dated $20 Libs make up closer to 70% of the type III Libs in that grade- It is significantly higher than I suggested
