Auction House Fees

I'm looking to sell a collection of about 2/3 unopened, 1/3 high grade cards, vintage (1960-1970's) material. Before I start soliciting the collection, I'm wondering what range of sellers fees I might be able to negotiate. The collection would be conservatively valued at between $40,000 and $50,000. Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

For a collection of that value I would expect most of the auction
houses to offer you 105% of the hammer price with zero
    commission.

That assumes the unopened are pre-1981 and the high grade stars
are mostly several hundred $ and up.

you could also consider putting them up on the B/S/T board
here and selling them individually. You would probably do better
breaking them individually than bulking them.

good luck and keep us posted.

105% and no commission.....really. Is this true? So in essence they are getting most of the buyers premium?

They are getting 5% of the 20% that the auction house charges the buyers. Don't feel bad for the auction house - they are still making 15% in that scenario.

It's definitely true. Most of the major houses and some of the smaller guys have been doing this for years. If you're consigning
more than $20k and you pay them anything you are getting ripped off.
