New to selling/PSA grading, could use some help (lot of pics)

Hey guys. Like the title says, I'm new to the world of selling and grading baseball cards. I have a couple of questions that I hope you could help me with. First, I have some cards that have dirt on them but are otherwise in good shape. I was wondering if there was a way to get that dirt off of them without damaging the cards.

Also, the $189 price tag on a PSA membership is pretty steep, but the 15 free vouchers are tempting. I have 15 cards in mind; do you think these cards would be worth that price? Here they are:

Geez, the membership went up! I've been here for a little while and have yet to be a full member. The fifteen vouchers does sound good. As for your cards, send all the Mantles, Clementes and Koufax. Definitely the Brock RCs and the Gibson RC. The Maris's look good but I'd hold off on that Yaz unless it has sentimental value. I think someone recommended sending in your most expensive cards first due to the lack of "value limit" on them.

    I agree.

And to add, that 62 Mantle is pretty well centered. Very nice card.

Rule of thumb is to always send Mantle's in
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • Thanks for the responses. I truly appreciate them. No help with the dirt cleaning? I have excellent condition cards in regards to sharp corners and perfect centering, but they have some dirt that I'm afraid will bring down the value too much. Will alcohol swabs work? What other options are there?

And yeah, I was thinking about replacing Carl. Which one of these would you replace him with? The Mantle is in pretty bad shape...

  • Nice cards!

I would replace it with the Mantle or The Musial in the second set.

Good Luck on your first submission!!!

first off how to wipe down the cards/remove the dirt. Get a pair of pantyhose and wipe the card down-every thing will come off without scratching to the card.
As far as the cards go those 1962 Topps cards are nice. One of the Maris cards looks like a very nice card and could grade very high. The Mantles and Clementes are a no brainer. I would not grade the Yaz and a couple of others in that batch. Not sure if you have more cards to grade but I would maximize your dollar and only send in those that would cost the most through PSA. PM me if you have any questions.

I would grade them all, nice cards! Good Luck and welcome to the boards.
  • Again, thanks guys. I'd LOVE to send the other Mantle, but it's in such bad condition, I don't think it'll get higher than a PSA 2 or PSA 3. It might even go lower! Also, being a die-hard Cardinals fan living in St. Louis, I might keep the off-center Brock RC and try to get it autographed for myself.

To Shane: These cards are what I consider my 15 or so best. I have other big names, like Harmon Killebrew, Warren Spahn, and others, but I believe these are my top dollar cards. Which cards would you not send?

To Matt: I will eventually get them all graded, but I need to deal with the first 15, hopefully make a tidy profit, then send in about 100 or so more cards to be bulk graded.

I'm really excited and ready to send these, but I've gotta wait on the kit to get sent to me. Waiting sucks!

Based on centering and obvious damage (and assuming clean backs, no surface damage, no wrinkles/creases, and no alterations), I'd estimate that

    62 Clemente = PSA 6
    62 Perry = PSA 5 (maybe 6)
    62 Mantle = PSA 5
    62 Brock 1 = PSA 6 OC (or MC)
    62 Brock 2 = PSA 7
    62 Yaz = PSA 7
    59 Gibson = PSA 4
    62 Maris 1 = PSA 7 OC
62 Maris 2 = PSA 7 (unless the print on the card is blurry, then lower)
    62 Koufax 1 = PSA 7
    62 Koufax 2 = PSA 6
    62 Koufax 3 = PSA 6
    62 Clemente PSA 7
    61 Mantle MVP = PSA 5
    62 Maris 3 = PSA 5
    62 Torre = PSA 8 (very nice)
    62 Banks = PSA 6 (maybe PSA 8 OC)
    62 Musial = PSA 5 or 6
    62 Mathews = PSA 6 or 7
    59 Mantle = PSA 4

  • Send in your 15 most valuable cards with the collector's club submission. The 1959 Mantle is more valuable than several of the other cards you've shown.

Send 'em all. No matter the grade, they're more valuable in a PSA holder

  • Thank you for your grades, digicat. From all the research I've done so far, I can't disagree with any of those ranks. I have some cards that I believe are at least PSA 8, but they are no-name players. I'll be sending them on my second batch, but I was wondering if highly ranked no-name players are worth anything. Here are a couple cards that I think are PSA 8:

    What do you think?

Each of those cards (Hunt and Piersall), in a PSA "8" slab, would go for ~$15.00.

  • I figured they weren't worth much. I guess I was wondering if those would be considered PSA 8's or perhaps even 9's.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for the pantyhose trick. My girlfriend gave me some funny looks when I asked to borrow some, but it worked wonderfully!

Those two commons are beautiful but for your free submissions I would not use it for this. As one guy said those are $15 each in a PSA 8. It will cost you $5.50 a card to get the commons graded so put the Mantles/Koufax's on the invoice which is a different price to get graded.

It's REALLY tough to pull a 9 in that set and I don't think either of those two cards have a great chance beyond PSA 8. However, someone out there wants them in PSA 8 or you could sell them raw as "NM-Mint" with close-up scans and I don't think your customer would complain.

Are you just looking to offload cards you've had laying around or is this the next stage of collecting for you? If you are just looking to sell, buy a 24 hour subscription to Vintage Card Prices (VCP) and lookup the latest prices of each card in Digicat's estimated grades and also one grade lower. I think you'll find that your expected sales total will exceed $189.

If you're collecting and into graded cards, use PSA and get your 60s star cards graded as long as they aren't falling apart. Try it once and see if you get any enjoyment out of the process. Holding a nice PSA graded card may effect you more than you might think.

Hi and welcome. I would replace the first Brock and the Yaz with the Musial and the '59 Mantle in your group of 15. Like others have said got to get the Mantle's graded, it's worth it to do it even on a lower grade. Good luck. Doug
