Sold most of my cards and got my new toy....

I thought some of you would enjoy.... I have been collecting cards since 1974 (age 6) and have enjoyed it a lot over the years. In recent years my interest lessened and I noticed my kids had no interest. I thus decided to sell. My focus became something I have wanted since about age 10... a Porsche 911. I almost bought one in 1997 or 1998 (put the deposit down) but backed out. Would have been fun in my 20's but I really couldn't have afforded the maintenance back then so probably better it didn't work out. With Lee's (CDsnuts) help I sold most of my collection over the last year or so. As I have said in other threads Lee did a great job for me.
I did keep my sets from 1974-1990 (mid grade so worth more to me than to sell), most of my Larry Allen cards and a few other misc things of low monetary value (like Joe Charboneau rookie cards). I also do still enjoy looking at what you guys are doing on the boards when I come through for a visit.
However, over the past year I have been a focused Porsche buyer. A few Porsche sites became my website to waste away time rather than these boards. I narrowed it down to 1999-2004 (the 996 model) as those are a little cheaper. At first I was looking at 1999-2000 but I slowly upped my budget. At some point I decided a convertible made sense since I am keeping my other car. I fell in love with the 2004 C4S due to it's wide back end similar to the turbo. I have tracked prices, options, etc.... This past Sunday I purchased a 2004 911 C4S Cab with 37k miles on it. Picking it up Friday. It was primarily paid for by my baseball card sales. Here it is....

I'm sure the reaction from people would differ greatly from collectors to non collectors (the "you bought that by selling baseball cards?" reaction is always a favorite of mine).
It's interesting timing that you post this as I am contemplating moving about 1/2 my collection to buy a classic muscle car. Like you I feel I could still enjoy the hobby without as much investment (but tone down my time investment) and this particular car is one that I have wanted since I was about 15 years old. So we'll see if I can swing it.
Beautiful car.
Mike
I wish I could fit into one of those things... too tall.
A couple of friends of mine have a 911 and a 944, but I can't even sit in the passenger seat. Their's are a little older and cheaper than yours, but a Porsche is a Porsche, right?
The biggest encouragement I got to sell was from the many board members who reminded me I could always buy the cards again. Ebay makes it pretty easy. Yes, you lose money when you sell but I can re-purchase every card I sold if I ever want to. Once the sales started I got more enjoyment out of that then I had in collecting cards in years.
I spoke to Mike Navarro a few years ago when I started thinking about a Porsche and thanks again for talking to me. Yours and several other Porsche owners gave me encouragement that it was a good idea.
Jeff- To me a 911 is a Porsche. A 944 is a cool car that says Porsche but.... I still remember the time I went to the Porsche dealer, years ago, told her my budget and the saleslady said, "have you considered a Boxster...." I turned around and left. Yes, I am a bit of a snob I suppose.
Mid-life crisis car!? You joke but not too far off. Seeing two friends, my age, dying this year has reminded me about enjoying life while you can.
I am picking it up Friday and am beyond excited. Like a kid in the candy store....

<< <i>Great car! When I was in school I had a 1980 Whale Tail. I loved that car. It was a daily driver fixer upper when I got it. After two years I finished it. After school I sold it to pay off my loans. Later I bought a used 1989 Turbo. After three tickets I lost my insurance. No company would pick me up back then because of my age and the fact that it was a Turbo. I sold it about six months after I finally got a company to insure me because the rates were so high (I liked eating food too). I would love to get another old Whale Tail one day. To me a 911 just does not look right without one. >>
One of my first Porsche memories is my friend's uncle had one with a whale tale. Late 70's/1980ish. I can vividly remember it parked in front of my friend's house and just by looking at it one could determine it was a special car. Your experience confirms they probably shouldn't allow kids under 30 to own these type of cars!

Yeah, the 944 is like the "Redneck's Porsche"... lol
Beautiful car. Huge grats, even moreso for stepping up to a rag top. There is nothing like driving a sports car open to the skies.

I hear that woman's pantyhose works great on that. Oh wait, nevermind.
Larry, that is an awesome car and if you are going to give up cards for something, that is a great choice.

<< <i>Congrats....I have always been a Porsche lover. I had a new 2005 Silver C4S coupe when I lived out in Palm Desert. Not sure if anyone is familiar with that area the I-10 goes right through it heading toward AZ. The area had newly resurfaced highway for about 20 miles with 5 lanes. So of course me being stupid would open it up and see how fast the car could really go. One day I was extra ballsy so hit it hard and going 125,130,140 then the car started to shake a little but still kept going then hit 145 and it stopped shaking and became even smoother all the way to 155 then i let off the gas. After I took the car to the dealership and told them what I did and wanted them to check the car because of the shaking. They looked at me like I was totally insane... >>
Bobby, maybe you should stick to building VCP. You'll live longer.

That's awesome. I watched, I believe it was, Extreme Factories or something on Porsche. A very, very cool episode
I got my 2001 911 Turbo in late 2008 with 7,400 miles on it. I had my mom drive me out to the owners house to pick it up and she took this pic as I was driving away.
Needless to say I am a huge Porsche fan!
<< <i>
fan! >>
Sweet ride. That's the one I want. (or a 1995 993 Twin Turbo painted black with black powder coated wheels)
Mike
Awesome looking Porsche! Good luck on your quest!

Why would you be flipping your mom the bird? Have some respect man.
<< <i>Vlad.....what classic musclecar are you contemplating?......please don't say Mustang. >>
70's El Camino, suped to the nuts, not everyone's cup of tea but it is mine! My head would stick out of the sunroof in a Porsche ...and weren't the early Mustangs made for women? ...seriously?
That is sweet and they give an awesome ride. I sold most of my cards and Jerseys that I had for a huge down payment on my house. Good luck and have fun with it.
Enjoy the new ride.

I think I have actually heard that before as well......Glad you didn't say it....LMAO
My boss just sold a 65 El Camino that his dad had. I tried to talk my brother into buying it....but he wasn't interested. You are right, they're not everyons cup of tea,.....but some of them are super sleepers. A Chevelle with a box on the back.....Big Blocks forever!
I will probably keep a handful of cards, too. One or two bigs, and a handful of more meaningful than valuable cards. Mainly 85 Chicago Bears related stuff.
Anyway, I will probably want to pick your brain a bit when the time comes for me to start looking for my Porsche too.
Enjoy your new ride.

Wow! Super inside joke there. For those that don't get it... THX= George Lucas = Star Wars = Princess Leia = Lee's perenial halloween costume when he was 10 = his nickname which has stuck with him since, Princess.
I just don't understand why the tribute would read "Princess2Lee"... Oh, I get it, someone else is already paying homage to Lee with "Princess1Lee".
<< <i>Congrats! This is exactly my plan some time in the next 2 years or so. My interest in my cards has been waning lately, while my desire for some more serious wheels has been increasing. A motorcycle has been vetoed by my wife, but I've pretty much sold her on a Porsche for my next car.
