my opinion is something gone awry during the die making process

from what I've seen of the process, it is quite complex and leaves plenty of opportunity for errors

These double profiles occur throughout the 1834 series & are
created by a die which is loose in the press causing the die face
to shift on a horizontal axis during striking. sometimes referred
to as "die bounce".
Double, triple & even quadruple profile strikes happen to many
early era coin production pieces, especially in the large cent & half dollars.

other catalog references.
