Any coin sellers seeing ebay sales plummet?

TURBOTURBO Posts: 494 ✭✭✭
Is it just me or is something wrong that is causing sales to drop off over 50% the last couple weeks?

No, just read oline that something bad is going on with ebay servers that are causing sales to spike down sharply for thousands of sellers with store fronts.

Seemed a bit slower than usual this week. But summer starting will do that.

    I agree 100%

Ebay sales will only pick up when PM's strongly rebound.

Ebay has search problems as well. In one of my searches the same 1890cc Morgan
comes up (first in the search results) day after day. The listing was sold about two
weeks ago and has been in my safe for over a week.

    Manorcourtman,

In the powerseller discussion board there is quite a bit of grousing about ebays servers. More than normal chatter. Can't link it but if you can log in ...it is all there in black and white for all to read.

Might be the beginning of slow season as weather gets better and people do more outside stuff.

    1. Beginning of summer. normal slowdown
    2. Ebay server issues...if true
    3. Weak economy. fact
    4. PM's tailing off. fact

******* WORLD MATERIAL to international buyers.....outstanding.

Might be the start of a very slow summer for common USA stuff.

My auction sell throughs are 100%
    My BIN are about 33%

    Have a nice day

Yes, I have noticed and instead of selling I've been buying small. Silver quarters and Peace dollars and having some real fun buying raw.....Joe

YUP! Looks like some things have been kept under wraps for the last few weeks. This explains why so many times I clicked to look at or bid on a item I was always getting a error message to try again later

    From ebay tec page.

It is time to start issuing sellers REFUNDS ebay! There are glitches being reported all over your site and now on other web sites as well.

When are you going to be honest and make an announcement admitting ebay is having major technical issues???

Why do you keep allowing sellers to list items and auctions that will NEVER be seen!!! Because of your GREED! Get the sellers money anyway, right?

All of the reasons spelled out by previous posters are true enough. One factor not stated yet is the higher prices being asked on buy-it-nows, an obvious result of increased seller fees. I don't have time to

necessarily watch an auction for 5+ days. I know what I believe to be a fair price on any given item based on consistent observation of the market, previous sales history, b & m pricing, etc. I much prefer a seller

that has done their research and sets a buy-it-now fairly and not put some astronomical figure hoping for a sucker to come along. Lately that seems to be the general case. Lots of "get my fees paid plus" attitudes

out there. Also, I notice more and more that "free delivery" has gone out the window predominantly and that shipping charges are double what it would actually cost the seller to ship. The pm values definately

play into it for me as well when it comes to common date, average grade merchandise. I still look when I can for the best deals of course, reasonable shipping charges are ok, but free is a huge plus! To keep

this coin related, that's my two cents! image

It is spring - many of us move on to our other hobbies now. While preparing for my taxes a few months ago I noticed that 90% of my purchases and sales occurred during november through march.
  • BryceMBryceM Posts: 11,798 ✭✭✭✭✭
I had a few true auctions close today (mid-grade type stuff). Ouch! I was about to start a thread here asking what was going on. About one more of these type of days and I'll have to find a different way to move coins. In general, there seems to be an across-the-board hike in selling (and buying) fees. The net result is that the hobby is way less fun when it gets more expensive.

One of the big draws for me is that I can usually get back more or less what I put in to coins. When this is no longer true, it's time to reevaluate newPs and sales. Sale prices at Heritage and Stacks seem to be holding up a bit better - at least for the stuff I'm looking at. I agree that the PM hit isn't helping either. I find that my enthusiasm for eBay is slipping.
  • Ah, all is going according to plan image

Now for part two - switching from seller to buyer hahahaha!

I was disappointed in my raw auctions that closed last night, but did okay on a certified coin. I've got a big old crop of raw stuff listed now for the summer vacation fund...hoping next weekend is good.

Edit - Though as I type that, I'm concerned that perhaps Memorial Day weekend may have been a bad choice. :S

Yes ebay store sales have slowed the last couple of weeks and I have many items less than $50. This has been a typical hapening the last coupla of years. Action at shows has been slow sales wise but I have bought some really good deals. When selling is slow, it may be a good time to buy. People in the coin business in the know want their capital structure during the summer season to be heavily weighted towards cash and avoid buying unless its a super deal they can instantly flip for more money.

    1. It is the summer slow season - guys are spending money on cars, entertainment, family vacation and (or) their SugarBaby. Lets face it you can't take coins with you when you kick.
    2. The economy has been in the tank, people coming into shows have very little money I have observed. The future is uncertain for many people with skyrocketing healthcare and a firing or major health care crises away from the poverty level. Coins are not a basic need like housing, food, and transportation.
    3. The metals markets have dipped and many folks are buying USM products to churn thru Teletrade raw coin service in the hope of making money on 70's.
    4. Rich collectors don't buy a lot of the coins under $1000 like many of us do. They are into ultra big ticket stuff like Legend has where coins are more of a Registry Contest type of hobby and cost what a car, boat, or home would cost. Once these big ticket customers buy this material (paying a substantial premium above bid) they are essentially the end user.

The summer season is a good time to buy but garnishing the funds up can be a challenge. Fun or coins, always a conflict for me.

I was not aware of ebay server problems but thanks for sharing.

I rec'd a 1099 last year, and if I quit selling today, I will still get a 1099 next year for even more.
  • For us, eBay tends to track our business in general (we list hevily on our site and on eBay so it's easy to track). We saw biz drop somewhat right around April 15 and it seemed like a 30-day hangover from tax-time. Sales were slower across the board. Shows like Central States and Denver ANA took a huge hit in terms of attendance this year as people have discussed. In years past tax-time has always been a factor for collectors buying coins but we were spoiled in 2011 as metals prices really helped us out. This year was more typical AND we were hurt by dropping prices of PM. About a week ago, however, we saw sales and bidding pick up significantly, and now metals are moving in the right direction, so I feel that the market will gain strength from a low point of late April.

Is it possible to link your eBay store items with your webstore items ?

Been good for me. I had a couple better items sell that had been up there for a while. Plus lots of things in the $25-$75 range.

So how is that U.S. Coin site ?
How secure, etc. ... Who protects buyer and seller and plays mitigator/litigator in deals gone south ? Just curious.

p.s. it looks like it could be an option with less costs, but I did no research. Thanks for sharing.

I have seen my website traffic drop off 20% in the last few weeks on a few different sites. Ebay is much the same.
I seldom check PM's but do check emails often jason@seated.org
