Definitely pretty nickels, but I'd like to suggest, with all respect, that the first one is scuffed up enough that if it got an MS grade, it was an error.

Roller marks....How much does this effect the grade ? Or, does it effect the grade at all?

Both are likely 66 but the second looks to be the more attractive- even in the same holder coins still need to be looked at

Not my series, but 66,67,65. I like guessing, but they are truly that, plus some.

    one 63?
  • Coin #1 -MS66 (The coin has MS67 surfaces, but I'm subtracting a point for the spots)
    Coin #2 - MS67
    Coin #3 - MS67 by today's standards (I'll guess that it is in a 64-65 rattler).

Buffalo Nickel's are a tough coin to grade, even for the "World Class Graders" ...I love the series and for my money the 65 I'm showing is just as nice if not better than the 67"s---Technically speaking of course.... All are gorgeous and the second 67 I have owned for more years than I can remember. The Buff with the roller marks I just purchased not to long ago off e-bay with the worst image you'll ever see from a seller . It was a new listing with a buy it now price of $120.00 ....It was listed on the bay for about 45 minutes with 3 offers image I didn't offer, I purchased it and never looked back, it an amazing Buff with great eye appeal. Yep, roller marks and they don't bother me a bit, in fact I like em. Thanks to all for playing along and eyeballing my Buffs over the years. Your all a fun group. Take care....Joe

Edited to say Grip, Steve, my friend, you were very close....Joe

Joe, all are nice but sign me up for the second one. Just a great look. I think the "spread-out" strike on the "FIVE CENTS" on the first one makes it inferior to the second one. As for the rattler, it could likely upgrade, but it is just fine in that holder.

Thanks for sharing and, as always, great photos!

Thank you for the compliment on my imaging, that's always nice for me to hear. And your right it wouldn't be worth the trouble or the $ to resubmit the rattler buff for another opinion. It's just fine like it is and I know for sure it would up grade so I don't need the help. I have another 38-d pcgs Buff that an ms-66 but the 65 is WAY nicer, go figure.....Thanks again....Joe

    hey joe,
kinda late to the pic-nic here but
how that 1st one made 67 is beyond not only me...with how flat the strike is on obv n rev...the words five cents and hair before braids....image
i'd also think the 2nd one with the minor hit on his nose and 2 small ones on his forehead would of limited him to 66
the last one was the best of um...lol came in at 65
    yeah i would of been
    64
    66
    66/67

  • This is why I like the Buffalo series. Just look at the wide range of guesses on grading a common date Buffalo. If this was a Morgan dollar GTG everybody would have been dead on. I didn't see the thread until the grades have been posted but my intitial guess for them was 67. The excellent eye appeal is what got it to 67 IMO. If they were average blast white they would have been no higher than 66 (IMO they would cross to 66 if sent to our host). If a nice strike would have been thrown in the mix those would be superb! Regardless, I always love the coins you post

Thank you and I agree 100%....You can throw the grades to the wind as it really doesn't matter as the eye appeal is what brought me to these buffs and the eye appeal is what makes me keep them. My thoughts, the grades are just fine , you guys need to see these in hand to really appreciate them the way I do. Thanks again to all, it's been fun. And Ted, I'm disappointed with your response! Your beating me up again ....image Lets see yours.....Joe

It's my opinion that it's a 64. The strike is average but the luster is strong, not to mention the eye appeal which has nothing to do with the technical grade, few blemishes. The eye appeal is why I submitted this Buff looking for a star...I have another 65 in a old holder and it's very close to the one I'm showing you here. I have to run for a bit but when I return I'll pull some more 36 buffs out to compare. In the mean time if anybody else has a 36 feel free the post it....

I hear you. I have two 38 buffs both "graded" by PCGS. One a 64, the other a 66. They are exactly the same. If you put a gun to my head I would say the 64 is slightly better. Dont even get me started on plus grades. image

Just for fun, here's another 36 from my coin album. It just sits there and looks pretty with better than average luster and pastel colors, mainly on the reverse. The obverse has what I call a stoned Indian. His eye looks as he has had a dose of heroin. As far as the grade goes, who cares....
